Did you ever figure this out? I've gone through 3 bottles of dye and can only get spotted, splotchy results. I tried hot water, soapy water, added salt. No dice
@damesydneyleatherworksprie91363 жыл бұрын
@@PickledAmericano I did figure it out. First you have to use an alcohol based stain. Then there is a mix ratio sweet spot. Shallow pan , small amount of water. But really I didn’t like the result as the color leached off the leather for days.
@kimbarron42396 жыл бұрын
Check out marbling technique for adding color also. You should be able to float leather dye on Carrageenan if you want more control over the patterns. If you want, that is.

@robinprivate66674 жыл бұрын
Is there a certain grade of veg tan that you are using? I have tried this process on several pieces ranging from a craftsman level to a superior level and CANNOT for the life of me get anywhere close to the marble effect shown. :( I have also tried pre-treating with neatsfoot oil (which I do for my normal dyeing) down to no pre-treatment of any kind and the dye just rolls off. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Wow, this video made me remember a multi colored wallet I had in the 1970s, it wasn't terribly well stitched but the leather colors and embossing were beautiful. It was evidently made in another country. I bought it either at a headshot or one of all these small craft and import shops that used to exist back then. The late sixties and parts of the seventies eras where people valued hand made items. Thank you for inspiring me to revisit really pleasant memories from my hippish teen years. Good times. ✌️☮️

Gum tragacanth for the top? Do you use resolene to keep colors from coming off?
@russellj.67086 жыл бұрын
Hello Guys. I have been watching you from afar for a while now. I like your work very much. I'd like to see more tooling, color etc. But we ALL do it different. So, I tried your method last night and it sort of worked. I wasn't expecting perfection the first time. Besides, I have lots of Black Dye to repair any really bad mistakes ;) Either way i was pretty happy with the outcome EXCEPT................... I don't know if I'm explaining this correctly but the "RED" seemed to come off on everything after it dried. As if it was suddenly a powder. Seemed to go away after the Gum Trag. Hopefully the sealing with Carnauba Cream will prevent any more. Did i miss a step? I did watch the video over 47,000 times! (Okay maybe 12 or 15 times). Anyhow I do love the way you guys go about your craft. I want to post a picture of my results from your idea but I have no clue as how to post a picture in this reply. Needless to say i like your videos very much.
@Corter6 жыл бұрын
sounds like you did it right! There will be powdered dye after it dries, I brush it off then seal with gum trag. After drying for a few hours (usually overnight) the color is solid and doesn't come off :) Glad you enjoyed the video! We don't do any tooling but we've got lots more fun stuff coming!
@russellj.67086 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. That's good info about the brushing. Yes, I did use too much water. I also noticed that after the second dip it all mixed up. I added more but to no avail.
