So, my friend and I did a much cruder version of this in high school. We wanted a china cymbal, but the school wouldn't provide one, so we took the top cymbal from a pair of shitty brass hi hats and kicked the shit out of it until it sounded really trashy. It actually ended up sounding really good for a makeshift china cymbal haha. Sorry high school music department, but we had to do what we had to do 🤷♂️

@@RasputinPrime75Whether the tone is good or not is pure taste. But I’m certain the amount of fidelity loss is negligible for the purposes of this demonstration. We’ve moved beyond that era a long time ago where the average recording device failed to reproduce even a human voice properly. Ignoring the fact that most modern devices like laptops and phones have decent microphones, the fact remains that a proper sound source will still sound like itself when recorded and played back even on a phone or even something as random as an old Kodak digital camera from 2005…

I am Chinese. bronze percussion instruments were first developed by the Chinese and Turks in East Asia. Irregular or crimped, to prevent the resonance of the copper sound delay. Turkic people pursue sound extension, the cymbals made as smooth as possible. But beyond that, the alloy ratio is important. Chinese make cymbal alloy, use 13% to 16% tin since 3000 years ago, is very different from the Turkic cymbals

Good idea actually, but I'm sure it could be done a little better to where it's done more evenly. Instead of using a hammer use channel-locks and pull up on the edge/flange evenly all the way around. You would have to make a full line so you could line the teeth up perfectly everytime. But, cool idea.

Next time you want to hammer your cymbal and actually have those differences in density… Don’t hammer on a carpet. You can beat the living crap out of any cymbal and it will become a trash crash.
