Hey everyone. I know the audio on the first four installments of this project somehow posted loud. If I could adjust the volume post upload, or if I could replace it with a new version with lower volume I would (I do not think it is possible but if someone out here knows how please do tell). The volume is changed in the last few installments. So for now... sorry for the audio inconvenience, just turn it down a couple of notches during the music, thanks.

One can easily tell a real pro from a YT influencer by their work bench. A pro uses their work bench and it shows. Also, I really appreciate you putting your planes down on the sole instead of the side. People who learned from real craftsmen all know to do this - it protects the sole and keeps the blade from getting nicked. I never understood why someone would think the bench can hurt the blade while a piece of wood would not.
@JDanielGraham Жыл бұрын
Thank you for that! I really appreciate it. I have already had a couple people comment that I dont know what I am doing because I dont lay my planes on their sides. I really enjoyed watching this process and when you were using the Japanese hand saw I smiled a lot. The reason I smiled I have a very old Japanese hand saw that a family member brought back from when he was stationed in Japan after the surrender in world War 2. I still use it when I'm working in wood and it still out performs any other saw I've used in the last 50 years. It has some engravings on the blade and I should find out what they say. This video has motivated me to research the Japanese engravings to learn more about this vintage saw. It still has the original bamboo wrapped handle.

Like many others here, your video was recommended to me after watching one of the Tally Ho videos. But you got me hooked immediately. There's something so beautiful and calming about watching professional woodworkers. Building this instrument is just as much an artform as composing or playing music on it is. 5 years ago, when I had to choose a career path I had so many ideas of what I wanted to be: a carpenter, an instrument builder, a biologist (and many more, I know it is a wild mix). Now I have finished my Bachelor's degree and am about to start my Master's degree in wildlife biology. Still, I am hoping that someday I will be able to start a bit of woodworking as a hobby, to unravel and clear my mind. Until then, I hope I don't run out of artists and craftswomen/craftsmen such as yourself to marvel at.
@davearonow65 Жыл бұрын
You can do all of those things. The day after I completed my bachelor's degree, I left to go on tour with my band at the time and got to play with some of the biggest rock stars on the planet. I still play live music, still extremely interested in science, and even though I still play in bands, still involved in science, I have been a busy full time woodworker for the past 15 years including building massive entry doors, my primary living, but also boats and musical instruments. No reason why you can't chase more than one dream or get heavily involved in more than one thing at a time.

I was trained like that in my furniture making apprenticeship. I wouldn't do it without a riving knife on the table saw for sure. Also the table saw is a sawstop just to ease your mind. I got hit on the head with a stick in school for not putting the plane on its side when I put it down 😅
@JDanielGraham Жыл бұрын
I get that! I went through multiple apprenticeships and there were really opposites. I had one guy who was a brilliant furniture maker who taught me how to "sharpen" a card scraper on a belt grinder. Before he even showed me he said "I'll show you the right way but it's good to know the quick and bad way too" haha. I still sharpen them the long and correct way.

You're not going to harm the plane's iron by putting it face down on a wooden bench, and you'll almost always see a production woodworker placing it face down on the bench alongside the workpiece as it's just so much more efficient. I seem to recall reading an article many years ago about how the trend of laying the planes on their side came into "practice" and I think it was when large classrooms of budding woodworkers were more common. The teachers at the time didn't want to spend any more time than necessary repairing irons following clumsy apprentices' mistakes.

Amazing work. I'm in awe of your skills here displayed. You could usefully lose the music , though.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. Some people love the music some people hate it. I usually just record me playing banjo for the background music but just tried something different from a friend of mine.

The music is okay, but the volume of it needs to come down and move into the background a bit. In particular it tends to be too loud compared to the talking. All up a bit distracting. I am more interested in hearing the sounds of the wood being worked. Otherwise great videos. 🙂

Yeah - you can tone the music way down. Beautiful craftsmanship, Sir!

Turn down your sound.
@alphabetsoup7918 Жыл бұрын
If I turn the sound down to the point I can't hear the music, how will I know when he starts to talk to us? It seems by the number of thumbs up my comment has garnered that many others agree with my sentiment.

"F" holes? You should have figured out a way to somehow mimic the carvings of the cove line of the ship
@StoneUSA Жыл бұрын
It would affect the tonality of the instrument. Maybe not in a bad way, but you never know. I think a detail like that is best carved or painted on the rib. It is the side of the ship after all. Great idea in any case!!!

Sadly I already was in the finishing stages when Leo released that video. So maybe on a case or something.

Its uncanny! That is the most consistantly flat I've ever heard anyone sing. Its off by a certain percentage that renders it extremely hard to listen to, actually cringeworthy, but it is also very interesting from a neurological standpoint as the percentage of flatness seems to hardly deviate. This is one of those rare cases when I actually would reccomend autotune as it would be a vast improvement. Great video, otherwise.

Love your works Daniel, I have a question about the chin rest I guess you would call it, do you use Whale Bayleen or Bull horn for that part or a late model material? I am a Master Jeweler and want to make something for Leo, perhaps a tag for an instrument? Like the Music.
@JDanielGraham Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Glad you like the music. The chin rest is rosewood. Very cool that you are master jeweler! How long have you been doing that?
