For added realism, render an inverted camera in the water. Like the water droplet from the astronaut at 5:58 or the glass balls. It'll feel more real because our brains automatically assume it'll invert so when it doesn't, we feel something is off about the water.
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
That's a very good point but unfortunately that's where my hardware limitations come in. Unreal supports refraction and it does invert the image. It just doesn't work on my computer. This really bothered me as well and I have spent a good chunk of my time trying to fake that reflection but my attempts weren't successful. But who knows, maybe it'll be available for more powerful PCs or maybe I'll figure out how to replicate it

Yes, i thought the same! I think maybe when the water is floating it looks like water but when it falls down and disperse on the floor it looks exactly like liquid mercury, I agree! I'm sure is something about the reflections and the fact that the dirt doesn't "absorb" the water, that's what it makes it not look like water, like it's too thic to be water, the dirth should immediatly absorb it to be realistic. But yeah, It's a work in progress so I trust it will get even better from now on! Ps: wishlisted on Steam! :D

i agree! But i feel like simply adjusting the material transparency should help a lot already.
@PretendCoding8 ай бұрын
@@samuelleblanc4011 That should help quite a bit, yes. What really gives it away is how it keeps its shape, and having it more transparent, maybe with a panning normal map, or even a slight WPO panning texture could help.
@ziek30127 ай бұрын
Hello. I am studying to become a game designer/dev. A few things that could help. To make the water seem more realistic you could put a multitude of things in the water to sell the realism. A few things such as air bubbles, dirt particles, murkiness, etc. As for the inversion, it is more noticable on small droplets but if its large bubbles you can do a warp effect instead. Obviously its still in its early stages but the player should collect the water for bending. So instead of a large droplet coming out of the water it would be more of a stream coming out of the body of water into the players hands, collecting until the water necessary is bendable. This could be acomplished using a teather system that attaches the players hand to the body of water. It would sell the fluidity of the water you are collecting especially if the player moves around while they are.

I saw one Godot video where someone made a simple GLSL 2D fluid sim that gets applied to the surface of ocean waves that are closest to the camera. So you could have a hybrid approach.
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
I'm actually already using something similar. The lake that you see in the scene is made with Unreal's water system which uses a mesh with wave simulation. I haven't configured them to my liking yet so that's why they're not visible on the lake right now

@alittletoochaotic7 ай бұрын
Hey, I had a couple ideas for how you could deal with the whole dropping the water ball down logic.Thought I'd share You could potentially detect what surface the waterball was dropped on as each material interacts with water differently, dropping it on soil as you did in the demonstration would result in deformation of the soil rather than spreading of the water along with water droplets that bounce off of the collected water for example. Here are some things you can try: Water ball dropped in: Water -> Treat ball as a rigidbody and use the same mesh dynamic to almost treat the top layer of water like a fabric, combine this with particle effects to give it that droplet look. After a preset threshold delete the waterball and increase the height of the water body based on the mass of the waterball. Soil/Grass -> Create a small pocket of water and then perform the same functions as the water to water collision. Soil/Grass option 2 -> Get a moisture index on the soil and increase it when water falls onto the ground. Give players the ability to extract water from the ground if the moisture index is high enough. Solid Ground (Concrete, metal, glass, etc) -> What you are doing rn is perfect for such materials Sorry for the long message, hope this can be of help. If you have more questions feel free to reach out, I am a developer myself so can help with implementation. Never worked with unreal though, more of a unity guy.

Welcome back and welcome to Unreal ! If you want to try again the "water plane" you could look up Unreal's "procedural mesh". It allows you to create a mesh through code and move the vertex around. I made water moving around like that using points moving up and down, affecting surrounding mesh, to have a feeling of waves, it also allows to have gameplay affect those points and have the water react to gameplay element for a more dynamic feel. It's not water simulation, but it's also a lot less demanding on performances. Good luck with the game !

Alright, got some ideas regarding controlls (I don’t expect these to be added because they might be more insane than I think but still) Left click adds/sucks in water, and right click + hold holds water in that sphere If you’re already holding water but continuously adding, you increase the pressure of the sphere, and upon release, it explodes out If you’re fast and turn while releasing or something, you could make like a water blade with the controlled high-pressure release I think this has lots of potential for creative players to come up with emergent moves and attacks

Hello, first of all great work... As someone who has been developing their water system for almost a year, I know how demanding and interesting it can be. But let me suggest a solution that will make your job easier in terms of water dynamics: look into SDF algorithms (whether it's for Unreal or Unity, Unreal Engine has a built-in SDF system, while for Unity, you'll have to put in a bit more effort to develop your own). I'm working on ocean and river system in the Unity engine, and modified SDF algorithms combined with compute shaders can provide a render texture or buffer containing everything related to water movement, leaving only the final details to be completed in the shaders, also you can use and raymarching technique too. Good luck with your further work.

Thank you! Actually, I'm already using Unreal's SDF system. I suppose it wasn't clear from the video because I had to cut out a lot of the technical stuff from it. I’m so excited for this!!! The recent waterbending and avatar crossover in Fortnite made me start watching the avatar series and I was like why isn’t there a true waterbending game? It’s the coolest element to me and so amazing looking! Excited to follow this and play this amazing game!
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm so glad that you came across my game! It makes me so excited to keep working on it. And I definitely agree, water is the coolest element of them all!

Don't you miss the csharp coding? How are you getting on with blueprints?
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
Blueprints are fine, they're similar to what I would have written in code. And they're a fast way to prototype things

Loved the video! I think the final water still needs some work. The water looks pretty great around 07:29, with the blue fresnel and warbly translucency, but in the final shot it looks like the metallic is cranked on it, as opposed to any translucency. Also, look into some animation tutorials, specifically about animation curves. I think with some smoothing out of the keyframes, this will look really nice. I'm excited to see how your game progresses!
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your opinion! I also like how water looked at that point, I think it got a bit messed up when I added the landscape. I'll definitely tweak the parameters to achieve a more translucent appearance. And I am really happy that you're excited about the game too!

Hey! I really hope that you make that project a game and not ending up just a cool waterbending simulation that you’ll play 10 mins then move on
@MantaRay1176 ай бұрын
Idea about the game: there must be and underwater scene and a part where the character surrounds himself with water to be stronger
@dibaterman8 ай бұрын
Hm, idk if Unity has it but wouldn't doing this on a sphere with softbody get you what your looking for? Still looks great. I'm over here in Godot still working on character controller crap for and animations... grah!
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
Well, I'm working in Unreal now so I'm using what's available there. It has a tool to add weight to a skeletal mesh. Good luck with your Godot project! I'm sure you'll figure it out.
@dibaterman8 ай бұрын
@@TamaraMakesGames XD I have to figure it out. Well it appears to me that you've got a satisfactory system, but if you want to you can check out soft body. Though I'd imagine the effect may look more like Goop than water. Also I don't believe their are any words that are not curses in Greek XD.
@dibaterman29 күн бұрын
@@TamaraMakesGames Checking in your doing okay! I think the war may be coming to its end soon, hopefully!

For Saving gpu computation you can add occlusion or like computing reflection transparent in some texture and reusing it though I don't know performance impact of this things
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice! I've tried some tricks with fake transparency with reflections and refraction but it doesn't look good in my case. But it is how a lot of games fake glass and for props it looks pretty good

What if there were keybinds to shape the water when holding it? 1 could make it longer and whip like 2 could be a ball 3 a wall

Shh, that's a spoiler for the next devlog 🤫
@bluestrawberry12257 ай бұрын
I still think that you have to add more smoke and mirrors it doesn't have to be a simulation, great work
@tooncobbaut27707 ай бұрын
maybe something where if the prticles collide in a semi high density/ semi high speed their collor changes towards white/gray fading and and away. to mimic/fake light reflecting of individual water particles
@PBCSandMarci7 ай бұрын
I feel like this is the method Portal 2 used, also im pretty sire the water bubble reflects things on the other side to look upside down
@whynotcode8 ай бұрын
Great stuff! I don’t imagine the water simulation is efficient enough to run on mobile VR out of the box otherwise I’d love to make a video coding a simple VR sailing game or maybe speedboating 🙂
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I'm pretty sure the simulation is not there yet but maybe new optimization methods will be developed later on and we'll get mobile and VR

I'm working on an alchemy game where the main character can control water (to a degree), and this is absolutely *inspiring* I must say.
@TamaraMakesGames8 ай бұрын
I'm happy to hear that! Good luck with your project! Alchemy sounds very interesting. By the way, I have a discord server and you're welcome to share your progress there 😊

@@TamaraMakesGames I felt like it would give a good reason for the harvesting and crafting mechanic I'm working on, and it allows me to use the TTRPG setting I wrote ages ago as the base. I appreciate the offer, and may *one day* but right now I'm not super big on Discord outside of as an alternative to text messages for most of my friends.

Im doing the same but going for a full elements theme 😬 I am planing to add the elements one by one tough and started with the earth element (the easy one) ..and its a VR game 😅. But coming along nicely if I can say so myself. Will be watching your videos for future reference 😶🌫️. Will be making some videos on it soon(whenever I find time 🙈). Good luck on the project and dont forget: imposible is just a matter of how and how long. Keep at it 😁👍

Thank you! Best of luck with your project as well! I'd love to play a game with all the elements. By the way, if you need another inspiration source, there's a really cool VR game about earth bending called Rumble.
