Hey Nerdforge! Regular Worbla user here! If you heat the worbla just slightly (not enough that it's soft and floppy, but just until it's warm) it's WAY easier to cut with a box-cutter! It also helps if you sandwich craft foam between two pieces of worbla. That way it's a lot studier and holds its shape better :)

My favorite discovery was when I found out that Wallmart carries solar powered garden lights for just a couple of bucks. Sometimes I can find them for a dollar. I have garden light guts hanging out all over my workspace; sitting on window sills, bookshelves, next to sculptures... just collecting dust and casting spooky light all night. I like your lamp so much, I might just have to take your idea and put my spin on it!

In my experience, the best light diffusing material for projects like this is diffusing layers from broken lcd panels, usually there are several, and there are also fresnel lenses, which give a cool depth effect.

When you talked about the concept and said fairy I immediately thought of the lantern in the thumbnail but wir little shadows of fariy. Kind of as if it was ingraved in the back of the "glass". I imagine it lokking like they are trapped to give light. Would be kind of cool.

After seeing you cut the Worbla with scissors and a box-cutter I can only recommend you to get a rotary cutter. Think a pizza cutter but intended for things like textiles and leather. I think it should work fine on Worbla too.

For tiny cutting details maybe you could try exactly knives instead of box cutters! They are like smaller versions so its easier to cut finer details ! I use one all the time and they work great!! Would be useful for so many material types !

OMG Thank You I needed this video. I have been looking for a cool looking Lantern for my room for ages and it never dawned on me to make one myself. I'm literally like yourself making fun, cool and crazy things for fun and because they look badass and for some reason the idea of making my own Lantern never occurred haha. Not only did you describe exactly what kind of lantern I was after, Fairy/Magical/Whimsical, but your designs were so badass and exactly the type of stuff I love. Got a new project to work on now :)......well first gotta to finish my Resident Evil Epoxy Coffee Table I making at the moment and then THE LANTERN SHALL BE MADE!!!.........again thank you and only sub'd last month but Love the Content. Quick tip, to remove bubbles from a freshly painted surface (be it glue, paint, or any other single-layer applied liquid material) simply fun a flame over it after you have applied a fresh wet layer. The heat makes the air in the bubble expand and pop. I use a butane kitchen torch for my projects, the butane is smoke free and it only takes one pass! =)

Curious because I’d like to use those “fat” power chords you use in the chain here (normal sized when talking 230V) for permanent projects that need 5V DC :)

I would love to see a matching tome (book) done out of Worbla to go with the lantern! Have the seal on the cover done in a matching/synchronized LED to where if you touch a "button" on the book it activates the lantern and the center seal. You know.. for when you're in the mood for toying with your own elemental spells :)

Awesome! One of the ideas haunting the back of my mind ever since Adam Savage made that lantern for his rickshaw project by disassembling a "LED flame" bulb for regular light sockets that's stepped down so much, he could run it for days off standard batteries.

You can buy plexiglass that's already frosted, which defuses light pretty nicely. If you can't find that, you can buy window cling that is frosted, cut it to shape, peel the backing off and stick it to the plexiglass or real glass for a frosted effect.
