So many people keep misusing the word Afrobeat. Afrobeat is a genre invented in Nigeria by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen in the late 60s/early 70s. The modern catch-all term for modern pop music out of West Africa with hiphop and R&B influences is Afrobeats, with an "S" on the end. Not the same thing at all.

A lot of people are making the same mistake. If you google "Afrobeat vs Afrobeats" you'll get like ten different articles on the first page going into detail about the difference between the two things. There's just a lot of youngbloods on youtube who don't know any better getting the terms confused. At least you put a space in there and called it "an Afro beat," for whatever that's worth.

@@mortolegbahdavid7780 I've heard multiple people say it was Tony Allen who invented the basic rhythm. There's even a video where he himself sits at a drumkit and plays the basic Ghanian Hi-Life rhythm, and how he got the idea to take the basic beat and sort of flip it "upside down" by accentuating the downbeats instead of the upbeats. It's analgous to how reggae sort of flips the beat upside down to accentuate the upbeats. Then Fela Kuti worked with Tony Allen to add other things like the use of Dorian mode that was never a part of Hi-Life music.
