Hey folks! In this film I’ll be making a cider that is flavoured with American Hard Gums using the turbo cider method. The film includes all stages of the brewing process, including ingredients, recipe, fermentation, clearing and bottling. This is a very nice and medium sweet flavoured cider that I will certainly try again in future, cheers!

Hey Stuart, your final abv calculation was almost spot-on but you forgot to account for the apple juice diluting the abv of your cider between primary and secondary. The 1.05% increase duing secondary was exactly right! But it wasn't 7.35% at the start of secondary because you added the apple. If 4 litres of 7.35%abv get diluted to 5 litres the new abv of resulting mixture stage is (4 ÷ 5) x 7.35% = 5.88%. Adding your 1.05% increase during secondary to THIS gives 6.93% (basically 7%) Hope you could follow!

Ahh I didn’t realise that I’d made that error. I thought I’d done OG - Interim Gravity x 131.25 + New OG - Final Gravity X 131.25… is that the same as what you’re saying? (Replying from other account btw).

@@stuartmoss Yes that's the right formula when adding extra sugar/honey/something that doesn't change the volume, that's all you need in that case! If you are increasing the amount of liquid (adding something containing water) you also need an additional step to account for this. If you blended 2litres of 5% cider with 2litres of Juice and bottled you wouldn't have 4litres of sweet 5% cider, you would have 4l of 2.5%. If you mix 1 part 40% vodka with 4 parts cola, you multiply by 1/5, and your drink is 8%. Make sense? When you added the apple after primary you multiply by 4/5 and go from 7.35% to 5.88% If you want a formula it's just: (Original volume/New volume) x (OG - Interim Gravity x 131.25) + New OG - Final Gravity X 131.25 in the case of adding sugar/dry ingredients you can see the volume is the unchanged and multiplying by 1 does nothing and so you original formula is identicle. Hope this helps

@@BeanatomicWally Thanks for this, I will write this down next week when I’m home as I have other brews where I’ve done the same thing, but not finished making the films yet. I might be messaging you to check my maths! Cheers!!

Well, to be fair you didn't anymore Gums in there, but at least it does add fruity yet rounded, sharp though so that's plus. I was doing the same but with Wine gums!! XD BTW, do you ever plan to get Wine sweetener? cuz I'd be getting it for Christmas!

If you use hard gums again smash them up next time. The smaller the better.
@MossHomeandGarden
@MossHomeandGarden 3 жыл бұрын
How would you smash them though? They’re called hard gums but they are chewy like wine gums. Do you have a technique? Maybe freeze?

@@MossHomeandGarden put in a food bag and freeze it might work. Or chop them up with a knife or scissors. More surface area when smaller so will hopefully devolve faster.
