You are a decorator, and it shows. Make sure you truly enjoy this journey because you will never have the same journey again. I'm happy that we, women, can take projects on, but to say, "who needs men", or women for that matter does a gross unjustment to either gender one thumbs their nose at. No one is an island into themselves. It’s cinnamon darling, just live with it and see how you feel. It’s one of those colors that can be very stodgy 70s, but maybe it needs a chance. I love the scandi use of red and this is sort of a toned down version. I’m in Spain and the quality of light in your videos is so different, milky and ethereal. In sweden, the windows are called "innanfönster", that would in english be "inner windows". In a store it was normal that you could by paper strips with water soluble glue on "fönsterremsa" (singularis), these strips you would tear off in a suitable lengt, pull it through some some some some water on a plate and glue over the crack between the window and the windowsill. That would take away most of the draft that come from these cracks wenever there is windy, this draft pull away a lot of wamth from your home in cold weather. When its time to take out the windows we use a wet cloth to make the glue come loose. In autumn time some icastore and coopstores still sell these stripes.

Hi Rosie! Before you go any further and I forget, I just wanted to tell you that, on the USA East Coast, New Jerseyy to be exact, "winter windows" are called "storm windows'. I can well remember how my Mother and four sisters would take down the summer screens (mosquitoes are a plague in summer in N.J)., and put up the heavy, storm windows. We lived in a three story house in Montclair, N.J., and putting up the heavy, wooden framed glass storm windows required balance and strength to hook them on at the top. I don't know how we accomplished it! Nowadays, the screens and storm windows are made of aluminum, or maybe even something lighter. I so admire your hard work! God bless you! Patricia

P.S. We had to hang the windows on the OUTSIDE of the regular glass window, which only slide up halfway. The terra cotta color is unusual but it will darken a bit, I am sure, It does look really nice though! Well done! Patricia

I like it. It compliments, rather than overpowers the natural wood color and goes really well with the greens in the plants. Do you like art for the walls? If so, then bringing in the oranges, burnt umber/yellows, and greens in a painting (which I'm sure would include one of your original art pieces) would be lovely.

I do too, all the way from Cape Town, South Africa. Since I was a child, I have wanted to build my own house. When I was 7 yrs old, I even 'planted' mh own little forest behind a cupboard in my bedroom! I brought in buckets of soil from our garage and dug up pine saplings from a natural forest across the road! No-one stopped me and passers-by didn't seem to mind! Of course, the soil was too shallow and they didn't live for lone. I was incredibly sad..

Lovely! You might know by now that you can pick all of our tomatoes, even the green ones, and put on a tray and keep in a dark place, or out in the kitchen, and they will turn red during winter. Do not need to have the plants inside...

Dear Rosie the color choice for your storm windows is perfect and lovely contrast with your beautiful wood walls. The color will grow on you the more you see it, adds a lovely warmth to the room. My father was a great gardener and as it got closer to colder weather would bring in green tomatoes to ripen on window sills, there are also good recipe or using green tomatoes as well. The Autumn season around your home is stunning. I loved seeing you picking your wild berries and baking such a beautiful pie. Hi Rosie! I think the proper word for these windows are "Insättningsfönster" or "Innanfönster". I had those in my room as a child and they would usually be put in somewhere right before the start of Advent. My mom used to decor the gap between the windows like a wintery landscape with fetvadd, small porcelain mushrooms and fir cones. I really like how the paint turned out and I think it will look great with the green on the walls!

My grandfather used to call them "innerfönster"/inner windows. Grandma did also put "fetvadd" ( really flat and smooth pieces of cotton ) between them too, but she also put dried flowers "eternell" on top of the "fetvadd" before closing and taping the window again.

Yes, that's 100% correct. I have such windows myself. The "fetvadd" which is a bit costly but reused every winter, insulates against draft but more importantly minimizes condensation otherwize caused with warm windows meeting cold space inbetween. Decorating these window gaps with the wadfing that looks a bit like cotton os a likeness of snow with little gnomes, red toadstools, pinecones as trees etc is a tradition several hundred years old by now. In summertime some people remove the inner windows from the hinge to have single panes so the window doesnt open both ways. A bit of pity not to wait until springtime and save up for real oilpaint with flaxoil. This is traditionally correct for this period building and for conditioning the wood and further preservation. But requires natural UV light to cure (hardens at 3 weeks, cures fully over 4 months). The oils seep into the dry wood and recondition it and unlike modern paints breathes when dry. Costly paint, but you need a l o t less to go along way. Needs to be painted on in very thin layers, but stunning to feel and look at. Color charts in keeping with this type and period of building are usually called "allmoge", which was the word for the rural farming class of Swedish people back in the day. Companies specializing in paints of historical accuracy and preservational quality without latex or other awful content are for example Gysinge, Ottosons, Ovolin, Kulturhantverkarna, ABC Färgekonomi, and several others. Usually in every region of the country there's at least one or two regional paintsuppliers that make paint of this sort for regional houses, and those geezers usually are a veritable fountian of knowledge and references for all things concerning renos, materials, local pigments and traditions. It's fun to look into even if you make other descisions. All of the traditions involve keeping these wood houses free of mould, mildew, wood worm, breathing and protected against the elements. The red exterior paint is a nation wide tradition called Falu Rödfärg. Its made of local iron vitriol burnt to different shades of red in different parts of the country. The high level iron vitriol protects like nothing else in freezing temperatures, long periods of wet melting frost and breathes in summer. Nothing is accidental really or a case of pure tastes, historically. I've mixed my own oil paints using traditional recepies with natural pigments and that saves on the costs as well and isn't too hard to do. Vapor barriers and breathable finishes are everything in old houses or they start to rot and crack eventually. Black or pink mould in a wood house is a death sentanced to the house (and very dangerous to live with even trace amounts). There's huge amounts of free help, guidance and expertize available all over Sweden and the internet too. Riks Antikvarie Ämbetet (RAÄ) is nationally tax funded and represented in every district (Län). They have local archives of landscapes and records of cottages, have experts, and answer questions, have free references, libraries, and lists of producers of materials to share. From wallpaper to roof tiles and window latches. They also have an extensive homepage on materials for reno, conservation, repair and envorinmentally healthy upkeep and cleaning of historical buildings explaining the ingredients and their function, the origin of the pigments from deep blue, to rich yellows, greens and Gustavian greys inspired by French 18th century architecture. This house may very well have an original foundation or section from the early 18th century, later expanded, altered. It was very common back then. Just sime handy tips and info. The RAÄ is funded by taxes, for the people, to preserve the culture, houses and old agricultural plants for future generations without causing damage to environments. There are also grants to apply for, for those with houses of particular historic value, great or very small.

The terracotta on the interior windows draws the eyes to the glass not the color of the trim around the glass. The color is pleasing and not as stark as the white. I think it will emphasize the plants. That pie looked delicious.

Hi Rosie. I live in Iowa in America. We call the windows “Storm windows”. Very few homes here have them nowadays. They were replaced with Double paned windows. More energy efficient. But I remember how summer time came and they were replaced with the frames with the screens. You always had to have a place to store them in your off season. They were put on the outside of your home. Where as you put yours on the inside. Many people used to use plastic on their windows. A pain to put up and take down. But helped with the drafty windows. :) Your paint looks nice. Take care :)

I think it looks very good - without custom blending the color yourself onsite in the same light as where it will be used it's difficult to obtain the color you have in your mind. And any change will be super noticeable at first. I think as the season changes to winter, with less light & brightness and the color of the light outdoors is colder the warmth of the window color may become more appealing to you.

To prevent the mice to come into my old house I have bought Silverline A-Repellers at the Granngården store. I just plug them into various power outlets and they scare the mice away with ultrasound. I have seen both mice and rats in my garden, but I find no traces of them indoors, so it seems to work.

Wow, that's a totally nice color you got for the windows, It gives a lot of coziness and goes so well with your things. I think a lot about your lack of heat and that chimney. You could get good heat in the kitchen and enjoy it so much. Isn't there someone who follows you nearby who could help and get a handle on that chimney because it's not that bad. I like the color of the windows. I also like that you have storm windows for the kitchen, sure will help with the heat in the winter. May I suggest, since you're winterizing your place - staple some clear plastic in the window opening of the bathroom. Since there's no glass, it will help keep out the colder air, drafty feeling and mice, will just help to make it feel warmer. Just something that I would do, I hate the cold.

In case you do not already know, green tomatos can be ripened with the opened peels of banana skins laid in their vicinity......you have done a great job with your reno. Your woodworking skills are inspiring. You may find it useful to make a bench outside underneath your porch so you can sit down comfortably to take off your boots to avoid traipsing muddy & snowy boots through your lobby.....

When I was young we called those storm windows and of course they were installed before winter and removed again in the spring. However I like that you call them winter windows, which of course they are to keep the cold weather out. I love the rich terracotta color. It is my main accent color throughout my home, complimenting my cream walls, light woods and 50 green houseplants. My house is decorated cozy-rustic and fall colors prevail throughout the year. Your windows add such warmth to your beautiful kitchen. A tip around the mice, you will never be able to prevent them to get in, not in the pumphouse, not in the house, they can squeeze through a hole the size of a pencil, or make a new hole. Try to give them some place outside of your house to setup, like a pile of wood or something, and set traps there, before they get into the house. I use Swedish kaviar as bait, they seem to like that :D

Living in the deep forest is very beatiful to go out in the dark knight doing stuff. Its nothing to bee afraid of. Its kind of a nice calm feeling when you feel calm yourself. 👍🙂 Expecially at wintertime with full trees of snow, and the sky at knight is clear and fullmoon and stars lightning up the knight.

It looks lovely. In the United States we call them storm windows. It is going to freeze here this week and we brought all of out green tomatoes in and wrapped them in paper; they will slowly ripe. We also made fried green tomatoes and green tomato salsa.

Storm windows! Yes I've heard that term too. Wrapping tomatoes in paper sounds like a good idea. I'm not sure what to do with mine, they're still inside!

@@wildrosie They won't grow any longer on the plants by bringing them inside, the vines will just die. Might as well pick the tomatoes and throw the plants out. You will get fresh tomatoes for a month as they slowly ripen.

Hi Rosie.🌹 Thanks for another great video. The windows turned out great. I would bring in the biggest tomatoes and let them ripen in the kitchen window. Because there is a risk that they will crack, now that it is getting colder outside. Is that a water filter you have on the bench? Pick white moss in the forest and put it between the windows to avoid condensation. That's how we always did in the past. If you put wadding under the moss, it will be even better. Hi Rosie! Your videos are so meditative. There's nothing I enjoy more than picking berries from nature's bounty and baking something delicious, and you make it look like a sacred ritual. I really like the terracotta color on the storm windows. At one point you were painting right next to a terracotta pot and it completely matched, so I guess it's well-named. Be well!
