"go out and boil a horse" is the best answer to historical accuracy purists as of yet!

I love 1840s clothing! Definitely my favorite time period. A lot of people seem to like the bigness and excessiveness of the 1830s, and the giant hoop skirts and pagoda sleeves of the 1850s, but very few people like the 1840s. It's probably because it so subdued compared to the decades that sandwich it. If I ever find the time, and work up the courage to make a historical outfit, it will definitely be from the 1840s!

Also interesting is that you can see the influence in 1840-50 fashion of the style in the baroque period (especially 1640-70) They have similar looking hairstyles, middle/low bun with middle parting and hanging side curls. And the wide necklines, longline bodices with pointed waistlines and gathered circular skirts. Fun fact; Queen Victoria's favourite dogbreed, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was first bred in the baroque period and named after the Enlish king at the time Charles II

It's funny, I was just looking at portraits from the mid-1600s and you're right, lots of side curls and wide necklines. It's cool how fashion repeats over time!

@@DixieDIY Definately, so facinating! Sometimes I get the impression that the whole 19th century took inspiration from earlier art styles and just reused previous fashions🤔

@@LilianaCroush definitely now that you mention it, the 1870s were taking cues from the 18th century with the polonaise skirts and the square necklines. I could probably think of more if I really tried.

Hello, May I please have the links to the fashion plates?
@DixieDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hey I’m so sorry, I don’t know what happened to my comment with all the fashion plate links. I do know that they all came from the LA public library: tessa.lapl.org/cdm/search/collection/fashion They have a huge collection and a pretty good search feature. Was there a specific plate you were looking for? Maybe I can find it.
