I've noticed he did a lot of photography before the 3D scenes. Grab a camera and go shoot some stuff, you would be surprised how quickly you can learn to make better compositions.

But, in the current commercial environment, people are interested in telling their stories and finding an audience with what they can do with Blender competitively and you have curriculum here that achieves that objective.
