Abel Kloster of Aprovecho (www.aprovecho.net) and Resilience Permaculture (www.resiliencepermaculture.com) shows how to make and use a simple leveling device using on-site materials. These levels are used throughout the world to find and mark contour lines in the landscape.

So far the best explanation so far. So simple. Thank you for explaining. Bless you. I would like you to know, that I will make swales in the middle of the desert, and I have you to thank. The fruits and water that will soak into the landscape will be because you made this video, and because you explained so well. So cheer up : ) Bless you.

Could this be accomplished with a small level attached to cross piece of a-frame. Usually pretty windy where I live so string may not work as well

He says he's dangling a string, but if you look at it, he has a weight attached to the end. It is basically acting as a plumb line. If you use a thin, strong line that you can still readily see and attach a dense 1-2 oz weight to the end, I think you'd be fine in all but the strongest wind. You could use an actual plumb bob from a hardware store, a fishing sinker, a heavy bolt, etc. for the weight. I wouldn't use a bubble level. They're a bit finicky, and getting repeat readings the number of times you'd need to measure contours at such a small interval would be annoying.
