If you don't have thiamin, you can also use other thiazole (5 Ring with a N and a S) containing compounds. Thiazolium salts (like vitamin b1) are frequently used as a less toxic alternative to cyanides in the stetter reaction, which is similar to the reaction shown in the video. The catalyst (cyanide or thiazolium salt) changes the polarity of the aldehyde so it can attack another aldehyde like in the video or an alpha-beta unsaturated ketone like in the stetter reaction Source: The heterocycle lecture I'm writing an exam about this thursday

Slick prep. Thanks for the hint about mp apparatus. I've tended to use mp tubes, but a test tube would work, and it's cheaper. Like cheaper. For those that are interested, flavors and aromas are still a big deal, could be that they always will be. Natural products and all of that. There's this story that I once heard about a Chemist and his kids during the 20s and 30s supporting his family (quite well, thank you very much) by extracting citrine and other materials from orange and lemon peels that had nightly discarded from restaurants in NYC and then taking those garbage items to his lab in a walk-up in Harlem. The reason that I recall this story is that for a while there he was the only person that owned a pick-up truck. What, not funny enough for you? How about instructive?

I made it with the help of thiamin, but the product is nearly white and not that deep yellowish like yours - maybe caused by a sideproducts which decrease the purity? Btw.: it smells quite nice, but by far not that intense like other aromatics, dibenzalaceton for example.
@THYZOID3 ай бұрын
my recrist was trash. otherwise it would be purer
@experimental_chemistry3 ай бұрын
My product wasn't yellow at any step. Maybe your KCN wasn't pure enough if it was selfmade stuff. I would really recommend thiamin instead.

You should never stick your nose so close to a chemical, use your hand to gently waft a little towards your nose first! @@THYZOID I could think of a lot of methods like the ammonium formate route or using a safe complex like potassium ferricyanide and acid and it would all have in common that you'd have to bubble HCN through base which isn't the safest way. I wonder how you did it but I don't know if YT will allow you to show us.
@THYZOID2 жыл бұрын
@@leothecrafter4808 I tested most methods you could possibly think about but I won´t show any of this on youtube. The safest and easiest route turned out to be one of the best ones. It only needs one reagent and a solvent for the purification.

I did this twice but my mixture never turned that red. And I cleaned it just by rinsing with cold water in the funnel. The ir showed it was pretty clean. But I got a pretty bad 60 percent yield.

how does it smell like? this compound is 100% a byproduct of a very easy and high yielding reaction to make benzaldehyde from cheap benzyl alcohol (with dilute nitric acid and sodium nitrite catalyst) it absolutely does make benzaldehyde, but it also makes benzoin, would be interesting to know if the smell is bitter in any way since that's how my freshly made un purified benzaldehyde smells like

Bro can you make Acetophenone? I've heard it smells like roses, but I don't have acetic anhydride to make it 😂
@zodiakofficial40932 жыл бұрын
Acetophenone does smell fruity, but I wouldn't say, that it smells like roses. If you want something, that smells like roses, than 2-Phenylethanol is exactly, what you are looking for! I made mine from Benzaldehyde -> Mandelonitrile -> Mandelic acid -> Phenylacetic acid -> 2-Phenylethanol But Synthesis of Acetophenone is quite easy. Just do friedel-craft-acylation of Benzene with acetyl Chloride. Or If you want the otc-way then mix Benzoic acid (food preservative), acetic acid and Calcium hydroxide (hardware store) with a minimal amount of water (to get mixed calcium salts) then perform a destructive destillation of the dry material using lots of heat. But cleanup of the product will probably be a mess^^
