I think the "hitting" of the ball isn't a hit but more of a block; When you're in the blocking frames and the ball touches you, instead of killing you it bounces off.

It’s meant to hit tho. Even in the thumbnail of the game it’s has someone hitting it. It may look like a parry but the sword is actually slashing it therefore deflecting the ball to another opponent
