Making buckskin from dried deerskin

Im am seeing how good of buckskin i can get out of a hide i let dry on a frame last year that has been neglected and bugs ate on . It did not come out as soft as a fresh skin but we can use the leather for projects. I did not smoke the hide in this video but we will in a future video.

Oh I meant to mention, I built a tall sawhorse big enough to lace a hide on both sides. It's sturdy and can switch from one to the other. I just thought it up being a carpenter for 40 years, never seen it done figured I'd share it with you for what it's worth.

Justin I have no personal experience tanning hides makes a man appreciate the work that goes into what it takes to finish. Think about doing a buffalo hide or even several after a large hunt .

Good morning Justin, I agree it's alot of work but the end results are rewarding. Things is this world is getting worse and knowing the old ways are essential. I've been hearing of antibiotic shortage , so if get some time gather some Japanese Barberry root for your medicine stores , berries are good as well in small amounts. Anyway I can't wait to see your buckskin clothes, I made several possible bags and quivers with a hide lots of work , brain tan worked best. I learned by watching Tom and Nancy Oar good craftsmanship .thanks for sharing the books to . God bless ya'll.

I've dabbled in a few hair on's but mainly buckskin. In my experience buckskin doesn't have to be pickled. Hair hides yes. I'm fixing to splurge on a Fleshing machine like taxidermists use to thin hides down for ease in softening. I appreciate your honesty of it is what it is instead of editing to make yourself and what your working on look perfect.

I had two skins that were dehaired, fleshed and and egg tanning liquor applied then left in the tub for a full year. They had a few funky looking spot but I rinsed em off and re-tanned them and they came out good. Not pretty but alright. I've got a steer hide to try to save next,lol. Leather is almost indestructable.

I am going to try putting a little olive oil in with the Murphys oil soap to see if it makes a small difference on a small skin that's a little stiff

I have a couple of deer hide with the hair on that haven’t been fleshed and they have been dried for three to four years. Can they be saved? Hair on or off?

Id do hair off after that ling but you can try. Seems like if they weren’t fleshed they would have rotted

@@randiegadberry5448 they can definitely be tanned. Id soak them in water overnight and flesh and start the tanning process.

Ive never attempted a pig skin but im sure you can its just gotta be scraped thinner
