As always, Jim, most informative and enjoyable. I have tried to spread the concept of NON-JARGON, which I learned from you a few years ago. You are correct about slowing down your speech. I frequently forget, once the contact is under way. Must try to remember!! As I have said to you before, you are the only one who tries to explain, not impress and confuse. I hope to speak to you again some day, though my vertical doesn't like the west. Warm regards and thanks from Paul W4PMH.

Jim, this is GREAT, especially for those of us newer hams who are a bit tongue-tied! The conversational advice, if course, is great advice for life, not just making QSOs: listen more than you speak, avoid controversial topics unless you have a friendship that won't be adversely affected by a disagreement, and make the conversation about them. Love the music too, and I'm inspired to find more from the artist! Nice bonus! 73

Good advice Jim. I agree with everything you have said especially the uses of QSL. It seems a lot of new younger ham uses it in every transmission they make. The other bug that gets me is the uses of the phonetic alphabet. I hear hams using all kinds of words like: Kilowatt, Sugar, Zanzibar etc. On HF with band condition changing it help to stick with a standard phonetic alphabet. Ham radio is a great hobby and a responsibility. Remember in a way on HF we are like little ambassadors to the world when speaking to fellow ham in other countries so be nice don't make it your mission to correct everyone if they make a mistake. I hear to many hams trying to be "Band Police" and being rude in the process. Great video as always Jim. 73 and QRT. Joe
@ham-radio
@ham-radio 3 жыл бұрын
It seems that in recent years, the level of rudeness has gone off the end of the scale. Someone yelled at me that "this is a net frequency, QSY, QSL?" There was no net. I had asked 3 time if the frequency was in use. His net was hours away from starting. He would not give his callsign either. 73, Jim

we have a ham locally that uses all sorts of phonetics and makes them up as he goes. I can never remember his call because he changes the phonetics everytime he checks into the net. Thank goodness im not the net control because I would never respond back to him. Some think its cute what he does. Me not so much and im not a cranky old man. Im still young. LOL :)

Great content and advice Jim, very much appreciated. What is your personal views on using 73 or 73's? My early days of being Elmer'd from wife's Grandfather was he was a stickler for just using 73 singular, which I always do myself. I won't fault anyone who does otherwise, but I like to keep being the traditionalist as often as possible. Is there a preferred usage you like? Thanks, 73 Jon W1JJN P.S. so glad to see you making content! Also, I'm a bit disappointed in ARRL, over the last few years, they really need to step up and message & campaign to the younger folks

No,. Honestly, respectfully, I think you are wrong. We are "granted" a license that has "privileges". You are not allowed to transmit anywhere you want to on the spectrum. Those frequencies are highly regulated and if you violate those rules, you may find a Federal Agent at your front door. And, for many reasons, including safety, it has to be that way. You are not allowed nor should you be allowed to transmit anywhere you want to because you could interfere with another service like police or fire or ATC. It would be chaos without regulations. I guess it is a little like a freeway. You should not drive at 120MPH because you could kill someone or yourself. The speed is regulated to a safe maximum. There are lanes. There are stop signs, etc. 73, Jim W6LG
