Coveralls are great, but finding a pair that fits well can be a challenge, especially as a woman. But that's the beauty of sewing your own: you can make everything exactly as you want it.
In this case, my goal was to make a pair of coveralls like the ones Kaylee wears in the tv-show Firefly, including the same pockets, waistband and of course the patches. But I can use the same pattern to make lots of different styles of coveralls. And I definitely will!

Does the twin stitch just use a single bobbin? So it's only the top thread you need two of? And was it just a case of buying a twin needle or do you need a special setting on your machine?
@InsideAlan
@InsideAlan 4 жыл бұрын
The bobbin catches the thread from both needles, one needle is slightly shorter than the other to allow for this. Any machine that can do both straight stitch and zigzag can use a dual needle. If you buy a dual needle that fits within your zigzag walking foot then you just use the straight stitch setting.
@CraftsWithEllen
@CraftsWithEllen 4 жыл бұрын
What Alan said! Two threads on top, one at the bottom. That's why it only looks good from one side. And as long as the spacing between the needles is no bigger than the widest zigzag stitch your machine can handle, you're good to go. Just check your needle position, you may have to shift it a little bit.

@@CraftsWithEllen I love the fact I knew the answer to this despite only using a machine for the first time with you at MC! It's a rabbit hole that I'm really enjoying! Thank you for the introduction. X

Hi Ellen! I just found your channel here. Great job on the coveralls. I've got material to make some for myself. I'm starting to make most of my own clothes that way they fit. Coveralls never do for me either, body is always to long and the legs to short🙄. I'm not surprised that your machine had an overlock stitch really, my 42 year old Kenmore has one too. However last winter I acquired a older Elna serger from a friend of mine and now that I have one I love it. I wouldn't want to be without one now, they can finish a edge or seam faster and more efficiently than my machine will. I've spent the last week and half building a sewing big table in the evenings so I have a better area for cutting things out. I built it much higher than a normal table so it's easier on the back, and in the one corner of it I made a spot for a nice old Kenmore machine that I found and bought a few weeks ago. I'll be getting the table into the basement tomorrow and getting that all set up😁. Great video, I'm going to see what else you do now too!

I definitively love this coverall. Each of you sewing videos are full of information. I didn't know there were so many feet for the sewing machines. I noticed how super parallel the stitches were, but I thought you could do it. Do get me wrong, I'm not disappointed, it just shows how I admire your work !

Awesome project, Ellen! Now I want to check what else my sewing machine can do, only to realize that I need to do a lot more sewing to actually think about using that. I have to admit, while I generally have an unhealthy "I can do that" attitude, it does not extend to clothing just yet. Thanks for sharing!

Very cool! How does the double needle work up top with only a single bobbin on bottom?
@CraftsWithEllen
@CraftsWithEllen 4 жыл бұрын
One needle is slightly shorter than the other, so the single bobbin thread is able to catch both top threads. That's why it looks a bit messy on the bottom.

I'm not familiar with the double needle does it require anything special on the bottom like a special bobbin or is it more like a zigzag where the bobbin catches the top from alternate needles? I will have to investigate. Great video!
@CraftsWithEllen
@CraftsWithEllen 4 жыл бұрын
One needle is slightly longer than the other, so that the hook on the bobbin case catches them both at once!
