Sent by Alex Steele. I held my breath while you were rounding that pin for fear you might miss and ding the handle!

That's a stunning piece of timber you've used there, what species of burl? its almost fiddleback. What type of polishing? Finally, is there an effective way of finishing pins so they're flush rather than rounded & proud? Is it as strong as peening?

Michael Oberhofer Yes, there is a way but its kinda based on what wood you use. For light use knives that are hiden tang(smal hunters, carving knives, puukkos, etc) i do one trick that i saw on IG page of Curt Haaland. He drilled a hole in his tang and peened a softer metal in it and grind it flush. Later on when everything is glued he drilled a hole and glued the pin. Where i am from i cant find brass or bronze, so i just use mild steel, but as Nick said small drill bits wiggle in the hole. I overcome this issue by drilling first a smaller hole, and then my final diameter hole. Glue it, cut it, flush it. But if you want to peen the pins and leave them flush, you have to make a place where the mushromed head would sit. Its not that elegant as the first method, because the mushromed pin head will not be perfect circle, it will be a egg like weird shape. Modern glues are strong enough so you dont have to worry about pins falling. One of my first knives didnt had any pins, just epoxy. I tested it extremely, and after 10 blows of metal hammer the hadle cracked but the epoxy was stiil intact. I hope i helped, and made your knifemaking a litle less painful ! :)
