as someone who started about 5 days ago, it's nice seeing a beginner like me. drawing can be extremely overwhelming for newcomers, and you see so many good artists and drawings online that you're automatically discouraged and want to give up. but knowing that there are people just like you still willing to try is a huge motivator! i think the hardest thing to accept is that you won't get better overnight. you really won't. even after a week or two your improvement will be tiny, but i promise it adds up. the best part of learning anything is looking back and seeing how far you've come, and the most important thing, while generic, is to never give up. great video!

If it makes you feel any better, I started drawing 4-5 years ago and all I did was copy other people's art! Now I'm finally getting serious about art and learning the basic drawing fundamentals! I'm a bit ahead of you but not by alot at character design! Anyways great vid, good luck!

as an artist who has been drawing for many years, I just wanted to say that this is actually really good. I'm not nessasarily talking about the animation and art you made (which are fine), but the fact that you are able to see mistakes, and things you want to aprove. It sometimes takes me ages to realise that I drew something weirdly. And the only way to improve is to see your mistakes, and try to fix them, little by little, so that when you look back on this a year from now, you'll be amazed by how fare you've come

Thank you!! I'm doing my best to be self aware and honest with how things are going with my art. I'm trying not to rush things but's hard when you get exciting about doing something cool. And yeah I'm keeping everything! (even though there's certainly some drawings that don't need to see the light of day again)

When I was in 5th grade I saw this girl drawing, nd she was pretty good so I immediatly started complimenting her art. so I went home and searched up "How to draw" and this video by draw like a sir came up on how to draw anything, so I started drawing simple shapes but gave up within hours, but a yer later 4 months ago I decided to pick back up a pencil, and best descion of my life

As someone who has been interested in art since kindergarten, too multiple AP art classes, draws digitally for a few years now, and is also really interested in doing animation myself, I was very impressed with what you did! Granted, maybe this current project was a bit too big/complicated, but I truly believe that with your drive, positivity, and work ethic you will be doing very cool animations in no time. Also, I actually kind of liked the 4th snapshot of the Granny leaning forward, it made me think of heavy perspective and I think it would have fit in nicely with the zoom in that you did :)

Really like these first two videos of yours! I did art for years and was pretty good at it, but recently realized that I was only really good at drawing when I had photos to work from. Similar to you, I'm super interested in animation and have been going back to square 0, trying to learn some of the basics. I've been drawing boxes like a hooligan the past couple weeks, working on perspective. I also think there's value in just powering through like you did with your animation. I have the opposite problem where I'll make learning the fundamentals into a chore, which just gets super demotivating. It might be messy, but you've at least got something to show for your work which is awesome. There's got to be a happy medium though. Building fundamental skills while still leaving time for exploring/being silly. Unrelated, but you've got the exact same sense of humor as me too, watching this video was like looking in a mirror haha. Keep making videos, they're fun! Nice seeing someone who's the same age as me going through a similar journey, you've hit a good niche.

It's great to hear from someone in a similar situation!! I've been trying to find a good balance between drilling fundamentals and doing whatever is fun to me. Recently, I've found through doing what I want to do, I naturally want to take time to figure out the fundamentals while I'm working on it. It feels more natural that way and less boring! (Obviously fully still figuring this stuff out so this could be different in like 1 month lol)

5:10 might be nothing but just to make sure, in your tablet settings make absolutely sure your table is 1:1 perfectly. So single monitor, forced proportions, etc. If your tablet is mapping (just to give an example) 10:9 to 12:8 it might not look obvious that its doing something wrong but it will make your life a living hell. When it comes to anything drawing tablet I'm completely paranoid these days and make sure if there is anything to know to double check (disable windows ink, whatever) I know it, and have done it, since it's just so annoying. I wish it was better, but it usually isnt; except for ipads those are perfectly fine as-is.

Fundamentals are important but I wouldn't soley study them out right. A big mistake I see beginner artists (mainly self taught artists, actual art students are a bit different) always do is learn the fundamentals and expect to become a God afterwards. Sadly, that's not how things work. And I've seen time and time again, people would get discouraged that all their "practice" and "study" of drawing boxes and spheres from different angles and perspectives don't make a great artist. They don't realize that studying fundamentals for the sake of getting better is different from putting those skills into practice. Kind of like how people do aimlabs and expect to become a rank 1 val player. It may help, but it's different from being in an actual ranked match. That's why I always stress for self taught beginner artists to just draw what they like and not care about the fundamentals. At the very least, go on a crash course on drawing fundamentals to plant a seed in the back of your mind that a certain drawing concept exists (e.g. different types of perspective, color theory, design theory, composition, etc). You'll naturally learn them as you observe the world and draw more, the most important thing is to keep yourself motivated so that you can actually reach that point in which you do start getting a lot better. Motivation is a self taught artist's best friend. Too many times have I seen people quit because they didn't see any improvement after "studying" for hours a day. Classic Theory vs Practice. Keep going, bro! 👍

This is super good advice thank you!! Lately, i've found the best way for me to learn the fundamentals is to be drawing what I want, and when I hit a roadblock or want to learn how to do something better, i'll look up a tutorial or drill some fundamentals for a bit and apply it back to art I like making - much more natural that way

poor planning lack of fundamentals taking shortcuts focusing on final product so this means that if you would want to avoid these mistakes, you should practise sketching fundamentals : ) sketching is a lot about the planning and isnt focused on the final product. I really recommend using yourself as reference! take a picture of you jumping or doing a pushup or kicking or talking or a close up of your face mad vs scared. And draw it!

if you have a 3ds, flipnote is legit a great way to practice animation lol the screen is small so you draw things way faster plus because there's not so many features and shortcuts so you end up learning by brute-forcing your way through ( ` -´)9

Marek Rudowski has one of my favorite artstyles of all time, and it feels so much more achievable than say- perfect realism.
