Here is a clip from a short video of nursery children joining in with a group fire and getting involved it lighting it. It comes from our Fire & Pedagogy course which is Module 1 in our Forest School Activities Online Training.
This is the same principle as using the cotton wool, however allow the child and the practitioner to have a little more time and to bring all the lit charred cloths to the centre bundle to create a group fire.
Their little hands require an adult to support them to have enough strength and fine motor skills to create the spark. You can choose 1 or more children to spark a piece of charred cloth (that is placed on the shell, secured by a small stick), then carefully place the charred cloth into the nest to co-create the central fire.
With very young children you may begin with a pretend fire, followed by a candle in a lantern before moving to an open fire. You could put a candle in a metal bowl and carefully feel the heat on the bowl. Our nature pedagogy approach is not trying to get to a specific outcome, rather take time to be with the process of discovery!
