Making Fuller's Earth Sinkant with Martyn White

There are several advantages to making your own leader mud and it's a quick, easy process.
Most importantly, home made fuller's earth mix is much better at sinking your leader than any of the commercially produced leader degreasers. It also has a much better consistency, and you can adjust the mix to your liking.
If you make up a tub once or twice a year you know that its fresh and not dried out to a hard cake (like the loon mud I bought a week before filming to show the difference)
Even though leader sinkants aren't that expensive, it's also much cheaper to make your own than to buy it- by a considerable margin.
All you need is some fuller's earth powder, dish washing liquid, some liquid glycerin and a small, airtight container.

To save even more - try using 'cat litter' , just make sure it's primarily made from bentonite clay . ;) * I'm so cheap that I can rub two pennies together . . . & get CHANGE back !

That's how I made mine. I had to spend quite some time mortaring and sieving it but it works.

The reason I make my own is it's better than the stuff you can buy. The saving is just a bonus, but if I had to start grinding up cat litter I don't know if I would be doing it.

@@FlickingFeathers Very little to no grinding required : just add enough water to soften . . . 'viola' - if too much water is added , just let it evaporate to the right consistency ! * In my advanced age & education I'm MASTERING in LAZY ! ;) (energy conservation ? ) EDIT : Use HOT WATER , it reacts much faster !

@@georgewocosky I can give that a try. My cat litter had some very hard particles like sand in it so that why I had to sieve it. I think it's harder to get that out when it's wet.

Great idea, Now make a floatant that is easy to make, works and is cheap.

There's a load of recipes for floatant around the internet. I've never made any though, as I'm satisfied with Gink & Mucilin
