Fused Glass Tutorial: This fused glass tutorial shows how to make simple plain coloured cabochons, and then use these to make a range of jewellery pieces. This simple glass fusing technique is very versatile and the cabochons can be used in many decorative projects.
This technique can be used in both a full-sized glass kiln as well as a microwave kiln.

Hi Everyone! Hope you like this video. There is another one about making the puddle cabochons here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooOzaX5rqsSjfqc. These can be used in combination with the small cabs as you'll see.

Hi, when I make little blobs from White opal they're not rounding as much as other glass. I guess I need to go to a higher temperature? I want to make these for the white & blue bowl in another of your videos. Thanks in advance

Hi Gilly. Yes, a common problem with lighter colours and especially the dense white. You'll need either higher temp or longer hold.

I know you use a full kiln, but do you have any idea how I can stop my microwave fused glass not to crack.

Hi Ray. Sounds like thermal shock. This is usually caused by ramping up the heat or cooling down too fast. Cooling down too fast can cause it to crack straight away or introduce fine cracks that fail at some later time. If it cracks on the way up the edges will be rounded due to the heat work. If it cracks on the way down you should have sharp edges. It's the temperature difference between the inside and outside that is the problem. I don't have a lot of experience with microwave kilns but I understand you need to allow it to cool naturally in the kiln. With small pieces this should work because they are small and can cool throughout at a reasonably consistent rate. There is no big difference in temp between inside and outside. That's what I do in my kiln for cabochons, but that still takes a lot longer than a microwave kiln. What is the process you are using?

If I'm not mistaken those of us who want absolutely clear glass puddles or cabochons have to be careful of shocking the glass into a frosted look destroying the clarity inside each peace. For certain this is caused during a certain temperature range during the cool down period. Perhaps this of no concert with your pieces because most of yours appear to be opaque. However I would appreciate your opinion or knowledge of this shocking clear pieces during the cool down period. I have a cool down regimen that combats this but I would be interested in that by preserving the clarity in clear or tented pieces might add a new dimension to your cabochons also.

Hi Bob. In a lot of cases for cabs I just allow the kiln to cool naturally. Cabs being small this works fine. While these cabs are opaque, I make cabs using transparent and clear glass and have never had a problem. If my cabs get a bit larger I do control the cooling and have an annealing segment.
