The most fun moments I've had making my game was discovering new interactions between systems and how they can lead to new tactics. So making a game that has a lot of interlinked systems creates this type of emergent gameplay and you can discover it during development (and find out what's broken and fix it to be fun). What kind of sucked was losing 50 grand making one of my dream games.. No regrets though YOLO

Yeah for sure, when the ai starts mixing with other systems and fighting other ai it's wonderful. Maybe your game doesn't have EvE combat but that's my favorite thing to watch for my game

Introducing multiplayer into a game brings a lot of "randomisation" as well, that's one of the other reasons Notch would probably still enjoy Minecraft to this day. You can create stories and societies in that game which you absolutely could not by yourself, and even though the mechanics of the game are the same, there's often a lot more involved. With more players, you're more likely to find new, unintended mechanics that the devs did not plan for, as well as bugs which can occasionally make a game more fun and entertaining instead of unplayable, though that's a tough one to get right.

intravenous 1 and 2 are my GOTY so I can only imagine how soul crushing this must be I'm sure you're already doing it but maybe you can have fun seeing players trying to figure out how to beat levels and things like that. Or speedrunners discovering ways to take your game apart

ehh it's not soul crushing, it just sucks that i made games that i always wanted to play and get no satisfaction from them because i've effectively put ~11k hours into them

I gave upon my recent attempt because it's too difficult to be creative in so many modes of expression at once. modeling, animation, coding, music, sound effects, art, writing. When I write I still discover things as I go.

Hmm I think you’re going about making games the wrong way. Don’t know why I was recommended the video but it caught my attention. My unsolicited advice: as an artist there is something that should be motivating you outside of monetary or pure external gain. A reason you may want to make games and artistically speaking for most artists, is because you want to make people FEEL what you feel, you want to share your love for something and connect to others through it. Maybe there’s an exciting beat in the story and you want to craft the build up to that and hope you can do it justice how it is in your head and how it makes you feel when you think about it. You want to capture it. The whole process of game making if I can liken it to creating an illustration/art piece, is never exactly straight forward. It comes with challenges. That first line of code you have to create, it can be like a blank canvas, how do you start? will it pan out ok? Can I capture what I see and feel in my head? In that respect, it can’t be boring completely as there are elements that you just can’t know how it’s going to pan out until you get there. If you know fully how something of going to go then you are working at too low a level of your actual capabilities and you should be pushing the envelope to where it excites you. I recently started to learn 3D modelling after having not touching art in general for a long time and I can feel the excitement and passion in me swelling up. It’s hard to get my head around these new concepts and i can have these self doubt that I can crack it, but I actually feel content for trying to learn it. I’d have more fun playing games maybe, but they dont leave me feeling content the way finally engaging in trying my best to learn 3D is. Anyway best of luck, keep pushing.

I have and idea that REALY great games start from the team of 5 - 13 people working together on a passion project. Valheim was so unbelievably good, and it was made by such a small team, its crazy. Solo game dev is... yeah, you spelled it. It sucks, lol. Talking from expirience.

Hey the more the merrier I suppose but 13 is hefty. I feel like 4-6 is pretty tight but that's really more for the club house feel than anything. Games of all scales can be amazing

Do you think you're going to continue with the IV series or will your next project be a new IP?

Definitely agree on sentiment but kinda disagree in practice DEPENDING on the game. Games that use pretty rigid systems and such i can see being almost groundhog day like but my game amongst many others are very dynamic. Tons of randomization going on in the gameplay vs in the levels. I made ragdolls and item colliders and randomized spell using ai enemies. Im sure youve done similar but having all my visuals and effects be procedurally gen vs animated means theres always a new feel to an attack or spell.. think of a game like rain world and how much variety there is to the IK in that game just in the walking animation. That and the fact that bad level can be made in an hour and i can play in it and mess around for more than that with ai shenanigans.. i dont know, im rambling here but ive got like 5k hours in my game all in all and it still feels a little magical every once in a while. Its a very very slow burn but its also my favorite game ever, personally. Of course, the dev should love their own game right?
