What an awesome video! As a lifelong Blues fan, that 2018-19 team and Cup run was very special and will always bring me fond memories. With how well the Blues were playing the next season too, leading up to the pandemic lockdown in 2020, it's such a shame that we never got the proper chance to defend our title. Not arrogant enough to say we would have for sure repeated, but the team was on FIRE leading up to the final month of hockey before the pandemic shut it all down.
@muzikdude11884 ай бұрын
Yep. The Blues were firing on all cylinders and appeared to be cruising toward another deep playoff run in 2020. The pandemic was where it all went downhill. After they returned from the lockdown they just seemed to lose their mojo and were never able to get it back.
@BobbyBoucher2283 ай бұрын
The Blues would have probably made it to the cup final had everything not gotten locked down as their was no team in the west the could skate with the Blues pre lockdown in 2020. The only team that gave us fits was Tampa and both the Blues and the Lightning exchanged blowouts one a piece during the 2020 season and it would have been a crapshoot who would have won the cup final had they likely met if the lockdown never happened.

Man what a ride that was. I'd have given anything for my Grandmother to have still been alive to see it, she LOVED some Blues Hockey. Really great video, thank you for it. Lotta heroes during that run, my fav was Patty Maroon. His winner in 2OT was amazing.

Pat Maroon game 7 took years off my life. You knew as a Blues fan, and maybe a hockey fan, that was winner was going to go to the Finals, and maybe win the Cup. God. Thinking about that game, just….still I get anxious haha.

14:35 You forgot a collection of mind blowing stats that I think would've fit the video AND your channel perfectly. Double OT goal against a native St. Louisan (Bishop) by native St. Louisan Patrick Maroon (#7) in game 7. On May 7th. In the 7th home game 7 in St. Louis Blues franchise history. There are 7 letters in "St. Louis" OH. And it was Patrick Maroon #7 towel night that night. That play to score the goal is my favorite play in Blues franchise history. It was poetry in motion. Beauty incarnate. "Magical cup run" is a severely gross understatement
@triples37689 ай бұрын
This was incredible to watch. As a Blues fan myself, I believe I got more emotional for them getting to the finals. I cried that night more than I did when they won the cup. I did cry that night too, but man, to see them go, that was enough for me. The Cup was house money; shoot the whole run was house money if you think about it. They were supposed to be there going into the season, weren’t there, dead last, everyone wrote them off. Then the run, the climb to the peak. Damn. When someone says “Play Gloria”, it takes me back to the best 6 months of hockey I’ve ever watched.

Pat Maroon's double OT goal in game 7 vs Dallas is the greatest sports moment I've ever witnessed live. The hand pass in game 3 vs San Jose has to be one of the worst sports moments I ever witnessed live.
@aaronanderson165 ай бұрын
No joke I punched a hole in a door on the hand pass goal. That game was a delight to watch, back and forth complete roller coaster. And the way it ended was gutting. Little did we know at that moment the Sharks wouldn’t even be a speed bump in the Blues path after that. From the second period of game 3 on the Sharks were beaten, brutalized, massacred and dominated.

This is an awesome video! I want to highlight a couple of things: 1) 11:20 Let's appreciate that the Blues were a single win (and therefore, arguably, a single goal) away from a division title despite being in last place in the league nearly halfway through the season. 2) An underappreciated aspect of what made Craig Berube successful with the Blues was his seemingly innate ability to identify good and bad forward combinations and deploy the right lines in nearly any situation. And he could afford to tinker because the Blues have never been superstar-driven and so they had a lot of potential scorers just waiting for the right chemistry to activate their abilities. 3) This isn't the only time a St. Louis franchise has done something like this. The 2011 World Series was won by a Cardinals team that was 10½ games out of a wild card spot entering September and caught fire. Back in 1999, the Rams lost starting quarterback Trent Green in the preseason and had to rely on undrafted prospect Kurt Warner, who had thrown all of 11 passes in his rookie season after the Rams had signed him out of an Iowa grocery store. Warner won MVP, captaining the best offense maybe in league history, and leading the Rams-to that point by far the worst team of the 1990s-to a 13-3 record and the first Super Bowl win in franchise history. In 2021, the Cardinals were again dead in the water, with a less than 5% chance of making the playoffs a week or so into September, but they won 17 straight games starting exactly 3 years ago today to secure themselves a wild card berth. But this Blues run was probably the most special because of how big a hole they dug themselves out of en route to the first Stanley Cup win in more than 50 years of the franchise's existence (despite making the finals in each of the team's first 3 seasons). 4) I'm very glad I secured tickets for the game 7 watch party at Enterprise Center, because it was pouring for a good chunk of the night and the fans watching at Busch Stadium were getting soaked (yes, a baseball stadium was hosting a watch party for a hockey game taking place a thousand miles away), but the rain did nothing to dampen the energy of the crowd. It's also the first time I went to a championship parade, because when the Cardinals had won in years prior I would've been in school in late October and early November.

2019 Blues are among the top 10 teams all time. Change my mind
@malinuhhh476 ай бұрын
In terms of talent? Absolutely not, their goalie was Jordan Binnington and their defensive depth, while very solid, was based on most of those players having career years. Credit goes to the coaching staff for getting the best out of a well-rounded defensive-minded roster and a goalie that caught fire (very reminiscent of the 2014 Kings). There have been far more dominant rosters that relied less on their goalies (2016 Penguins and 2022 Avalanche come to mind).
@BobbyBoucher2283 ай бұрын
@@malinuhhh47The 2014 Kings while also very defensive minded were different than the Blues running a 1-3-1 defense and would sit back with a lead whereas the Blues ran a modified 1-2-2 defensive structure and would often pile on with a lead off of the counter rush. They are similar in that they were both defensive juggernauts, but they played very different styles of defense. If you want to find a team that plays defense exactly the same way as the Blues and did it better, that would be the 2023-2024 Cup winning Panthers who ran the exact same system as the Blues and did it better than the Blues with far more skill never losing a game all season with a lead.
@johnnygarrison7662Ай бұрын
In terms of talent no, but in terms of an insane in season turnaround, this is probably unrivaled in my mind. I don't know if we'll ever see a team come back from last in January to winning it all ever again, to be honest.
@muzikdude11884 ай бұрын
The shutout of the Flyers in Binnington's first start on 1/7 was definitely the turning point. The team as a whole played with far more confidence from that point forward knowing that they finally had a goaltender they could count on.

I watched a Blues vs. Capitals game that you mentioned in January of 2019, which we won 5-2. The Capitals, as you probably know, we're the reigning champions. Younger me saw that convincing win as a sign of some sorts. That maybe, just maybe, we'd be next after Washington to win our first cup. Low and fucking behold.

Leave them hanging on the line, calling Gloria-a-a-a! I'm no Blues fan normally but I was very much on their bandwagon once my Avs bowed out. They were just impossible to cheer against that year! Such a magnificent run!

The only important thing I think you could have highlighted regarding numbers was the Blues 5 on 5 play in the Cup Finals. The Blues completely shut down the Bruins top line at 5 on 5. Marchand as an example I believe had 2 points or so at 5 on 5 in the Finals. Looking at his stats he was bolstered by PP and empty bet points, but Marchands numbers show at first glance they played well against the Blues often beating them up badly in their wins but in their losses they were held in check while the Blues scored most of their goals at 5 on 5 and ROR & Tarasenko were not hunkered down by the Bruins. Outside of special teams and empty net goals/points the Blues dominated the series,
