This is the coolest collaboration project that I've ever seen! I have too many parts that are my favorite: the home-made dies, the attention to details (cold chiselling off the slag), the solutions to problems (setting up large pieces in front of the forge and surrounding them with fire bricks, the many decades of experience all working together, and of course... The final piece! The gap between the doors are absolutely perfectly symmetrical! I like the other side not welded; it gives the doors added personality and it wasn't needed anyway. @nathantron3 жыл бұрын
If I may recommend. Try digging a shallow hole, and using giant plastic sheets and make a bath to put the gates in(or any larger piece of metal), and then use electroplating to make sure it will never rust. It creates a phenomenal result and it is nearly guaranteed to last more than a lifetime then. The hinges often last much longer too because it's a microscopic bond with the material. So as long as its greased, it will last ages...
@PaskMakes3 жыл бұрын
That sounds interesting Nathan - I did think about making a tray to dip the gates in paint but this would be another level. :)
@markfryer98803 жыл бұрын
It would be easier to form up a shallow box with a plastic sheet liner. The tricky part would be flipping it over. Now that its in place it won’t be happening.

I love the gate! Your attention to detail brings me back to your channel over and over. It's so nice to see someone take pride in their work.

Well, I was right - that was ace. I'll look for the missing piece later and get back to you. It'll be a bit like Where's Wally but with steel... I may have missed this but how long did the whole job take?

Glad you enjoyed it Mark - it took four days with the other guys and a couple of days for me to finish it. :)

It's gorgeous looking. What's more to say. A touch I personally think would look cool. If you could find some coin sized medallions (or a hundred) with a flower, bamboo or appropriate pattern on them to put in the major centers. I was thinking they could be inlaid using a magnetic boring drill and flat cutting endmill. They would cover the pattern joins but still look crisp.

I suggested this during the build. I still think it is a good idea, but job has been done and it really does look great a year on.

Hey, remember when you first got that fly press, and you said you didn't know what all it was going to be able to do for you, but you sure were looking forward to finding out? Well, here we are.

Excellent work. What I most admire was the artisan work, the tenons, riveting, bending the iron with an obsolete machine. I congratulate you.

Hey who are you calling obsolete!!!!! Haha

If one only observed the final product it would be difficult to even imagine the wealth of experience, artistry and commitment required to make the gates. Your fantastic video really opened my eyes to the effort required. Whilst I could and would never take on such a piece it is still highly educational and entertaining to watch this. Many thanks for sharing this. Cheers from Cape Town.
