Making Lampblack Ink

Lampblack ink is messy and not as effective as other inks, but it is easy to make when on the move. This ink making tradition goes back for thousands of years and would have been a familiar backup option in the early 19th Century too. That's what works for me. I got a five gallon bucket of it from my local chimney sweep. That'll make enough ink to keep me going for the next hundred years. It's important to grind it very fine - into a powder. A mortar and pestle will do the job - eventually. An electric coffee grinder can give you a powder in less than a minute. Be sure to rinse it out afterwards - and let the powder settle before you open the grinder. You don't want to inhale the airborne carbon dust. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
