Take those landscape models up a notch with this week's Skill Builder. Follow along as we run through the process of taking a smooth mesh and breaking it down into contour lines for a landscape model. Not only that, but we also highlight what comes out of SketchUp when you work with a mesh.

Thanks Aaron. For similar thing, I suggest checking Fredo Tools (particularly Paint with Altitude). You can generate the contours and color your mesh and have a legend for them.

I also used FredoTools but my version relied on Vector Push Pull and Slicer, turning it into a solid group with no mesh at all. Are there any possible ways of getting the contour lines from it?

Awesome! Curious what your reverse procedure would look like. If you were to take the topo lines you just generated and skin them back to a mesh. Thanks for another great video

Josh Drew If I we’re to do that, I would use Toposhaper, an extension form Fredo6

This is an excellent guide to creating contours relative to one another. However, what method is available, if any, for creating contours that are accurate for elevations Above Mean Sea Level (AMSL) based on a USGS datum point? Is there a method for importing benchmark USGS datum into a SU geo-located parcel so that the contour intervals created reflect accurate elevations (or very nearly) what actually exists on the ground?

How do I take this model and create a 3D model so I can show the excavation such as a foundation, leveling the pad for the footer, etc.

Tx Aaron. When we used to be able to geo-locate using google earth, I discovered a way to import an historical image rather than a current image. Much of my site is tree-covered and even at the best resolution the image is not at all precise. One way around this in GE was to download an image from a spring or fall flyover b4 or after the leaves were off the deciduous trees. Contour lines are great but without a survey or a higher resolution layover image it is difficult to locate my building. If you want to take a look at my specific site, here is the address: 250 Summit lake road, 12809. BTW in yesterday's election the town voted to sell liquor for the first time since prohibition was lifted nationally :) Tx, Rich

ecostudio Jeez! That’s a long while looking at the trees waiting for the leaves to fall! Hopefully things will now pass more.....mellow! Seriously? Since the 1930’s your town hasn’t been able to sell alcohol..? I live also in hilly though probably more lightly timbered country on the opposite side of the world and when I did this a couple of years ago with google it worked out really well. Took a fair bit of processing power to get it done....I think my first pass (probably too many contours) took about 12 mins. Anyhow, forgive my butting in and .... er....cheers! 🙂

Hey Arron, It's Guys. (LOL) I love what you teach and I am grateful. The version of SketchUp that you use is different from the one I use. I am assuming you are using a downloaded version. I use the free online version. Believe me, if I could afford the full version I would. I use SketchUp mainly for woodworking projects. Do you recommend any particular videos to learn from and increase our skills? Would it be too much to ask if you could throw in a few videos for the web based SketchUp?
