I'm not sure about starting one now. The pandemic has really made things screwy. For me, as an established soap maker, it's going well so far and I don't see it slowing down any time soon.

Sure! It a cuisinart. Not sure of the model number though. All the ones I've had so far have been excellent. The only issue is that some models have a safety button that has to be pushed before the machine will start. So, I'd see if there's a model that doesn't have that... Like an older unit that was rebuilt.

Thanks for some of your very informative Videos. Quick question, I am new to soap making, still learning a lot. I need to buy some lye in large quantity, currently I am having a hard time finding lye that is food grade, most that are selling in large package are industrial grade. Is there a big difference in using lye in food grade vs. industrial grade.
@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
There can be. Good grade is just about the most pure you're going to get. The industrial stuff could potentially have some nasty impurities. But not always. I get my lye from essential Depot. I find it easier to just keep dealing with the 2 pound bottles.
@jyotinair37363 жыл бұрын
@@unclejonssoap It has been very hard for me to find local. I use to get it from this supplier in 50lbs bag, it was food grade came out to .12 cents oz. Now there having a really had time finding the food grade and only have industrial grade. He even checked with some of his local business associates no one in southern CA. has food grade unless you get it in 1000lbs or more. thanks

Does putting the fragrance oil in before the lye make the fragrance less powerful? You would think the lye would “burn off” the scent?! I’m going to try this tomorrow.. making sage CP soap. 😊
@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
Never had an issue with the scent getting weaker adding it early. But, sometimes it does make the soap trace a little quicker.
@ms.c.28973 жыл бұрын
I think essential oils definitely need to be added after, as well as natural colors. But I'd think the fragrance oil is designed to work that way.
@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
@@ms.c.2897 honestly, most essential oils (in cold process soap) work just as well right up front. There's been no evidence of degradation at all doing it early.
@ms.c.28973 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I’ve never had good luck with the scent coming out in the final product, I probably didn’t use near enough then. I think you may have discussed this in the past, but I’ve found it isn’t logical or cost effective to use expensive oils as fragrances. Better to use them in a way the body can absorb them.

Thanks, two questions please. Is it clingfish in the mould your using? Any reason why you use this rather than silicone mould. And when using the mixes, are you not protection like gloves etc. New to this as just started doing myself this week but cheating with melt and pour as it looks scary😁😁😂 thanks.
@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! The liners for my molds are trash can liners like the ones used in institutions like schools and offices. I get 8 liners from each large bag. They're easier for me to use since the silicone mold liners tend to be a pain to release sometimes and much more cost effective. Silicone breaks down rather quickly when making lots of soap. Not scary at all 😁 You can do it!
@alikijones93143 жыл бұрын
Thanks forvthe information much appreciated. I will try that first with my melt and pour, as wondering if you gets crease's. 🙏🏼👍
@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
I get an occasional wrinkle but nothing major. Oh yeah.. part of your first question was about gloves... I should wear safety glasses when moving the lye. But no gloves or long sleeves for me. It's actually safer without. Gives get slick and create a false sense of security. Also, if soap batter gets inside the glove it will burn more. With bare skin, you can just walk to the sink and rinse with cold water and wash with a little fish soap to get the oil off and you're good to go 😁
@alikijones93143 жыл бұрын
Brilliant thank you so much for that. I would like to try with Kyle lye. But seems very confusing, I've read up some say use caustic soda. Which is best for facial soap and hand wash liquid soap, sorry for all the question. But make it look so easy. As looking to order some of the products needed but obviously expensive use the melt and pour. Just wanted to give a try to see if I can do this way. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
Well.. caustic soda is lye ( sodium hydroxide) in water solution. The only two good options for making soap are sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. Potassium is mainly used for liquid soaps but can be used for bar soap.

@unclejonssoap3 жыл бұрын
It really depends. We try to get a head enough that they're cured but that doesn't always happen. So, I tell people to assume they're freshly made. They come pre-cut into 12 bars each and are safe to use but could stand some additional cure time. 2-3 weeks works well.
