Well don’t lose hope. This may sound like some basic motivational speech but it’s true. Anything you are willing to practice and put work into, you can become good at. A good example of this is Isayama (the author of Attack On Titan) He had this amazing story planned, but his art sucked. He kept improving though and overtime his art became better and better. Im glad he didn’t give up, because then AOT wouldn’t have happened. Im sure your story is amazing, and it would be sad if the world didn’t get to see it, so please don’t be discouraged. (Lol sorry this was kinda long)

@@Zora-_- It’s never too late. I know people say that all the time but it’s really not. Heck I’d say it’s still pretty early for you seeing as your barely ending high school. As long as you utilize your time to work on your story and art (without draining yourself) you have plenty of time to make something amazing. Who knows, if your story is ever completed in the future, I might be one of its many fans.

A video like this would’ve been helpful around 3 to 5 years ago. I will work on my series close to 10 years ago and I didn’t start drawing it close to 2017. I did try my hand and trying to pitch it took a couple of publishers who didn’t hear back from looking himself publishing. Currently, I just hired a copyeditor to proofread my work. After that, the plan on hiring someone to make a new logo, and then I need to contact someone on market price. All this is not calling the factor that I decided to start during a prequel volume to my series. Even though the first volume isn’t out yet.

Hey this is a good video! I just wanted to mention that the 10% of royalties is get AFTER you've sold enough books to cover the money the publisher paid you. I'm trying to explain. For example, if you get a contract of 10K € (which is what you get in France. If you get successful like Radiant by Tony Valente, you'll get more) and a manga is usually 7,60€, so your royalty is 75 cents (10% of 7,60€). So you have to sell 10K divided by 0,76 cents worth of books if that makes sense. The publisher needs to make the 10K€ they gave you back. You would have to sell 13157 books MINIMUM before you will be paid ANY royalties, which is a lot of books and many authors never get that many sales. You have to sell minimum 5K books so that the publisher will consider continuing the series, which is still a lot of books. If the sales for the next volumes aren't growing, 5k books sold might not be enough anymore, because the published wants to grow the sales of the FIRST volume of the series after each volume comes out. (A long topic, I won't explain everything here.) So consider your 10k to be your salary. If you can finish the 170-200 pages in 5 months, its 2K € per month after taxes, which in Europe, is a good salary. You'd have to work hella hard though in 5 months, so usually beginners finish their first few mangas in 10 months which means 1K €/ month which is a very, very bad pay. So it depends on you, how well you will manage. The most important skill as a mangaka is to adapt your work to the industry speed. If you can write and draw well but you can't keep up, it's over. Many mangas that are considered mediocre art or storywise by the readers, are still published because they can adapt. I'm not saying not to appreciate those works. I'm saying, that there's so many stories out there, that the speed in which you can put out content is extremely important to your success. Stories that you hate, others love, and people can't read everything. So you need to adapt to the speed in which you think you can manage with 10K€ pay, and you'll have to deliver fast so that your readers will stay interested and your publisher will not drop you. This is for traditional publishing. For the self publishing you can do what the hell you want haha. This is why I chose to self publish after talking with many editors in France for months, trying to figure our how to publish my work. I get this information from the publishers. I cannot deliver two and a half mangas per year to get 30K, so I cannot keep up. But it's fine! You can still be traditionally published but you'll just have to know this first. Also, publishers nowadays require a lot of marketing from you, the author, because they will choose who they'll advertise. There's a sad story about AN AMAZING french manga that got cancelled after 3th volume because the author didn't get enough marketing support which led to no sales. But that's another topic. I'll do another rant about self publishing some day, which I'm slowly working on every day, haha. *nervously laughing* Good luck to everyone, and a lot of love !

@Millicomics I know I'm late, but as a fellow French (I guess you are) I want to know your alternative as a self-publisher (the platforms that you use). I also think in France we don't have much support from traditional publishers and the royalties are ridiculous which encourages me to do the work by myself even though it takes more time.

Good informative video. For me I would prefer self-publishing. I have seen some people be able to self-publish their comic books easily but those people have had decades in the comic book industry or an audience they builted up over the past few years. I am willing to spend the next few years building up an audience with my own work, and I know that it is going to take me a few years just to make one book. I am not good a drawing, I really do 3D animation and modeling (currently in school). I would love if my stories were made as animations but I am only one person and I would need an entire studio to make my ideas. So currently planing to make them as comics or manga, as long as I get to tell my stories I don't care if they are animated or a comic books. Just need to work on my drawing skills before I can start making my first book and start building an audience as soon as possible.

Hello there!!! I just wanna say I love your videos so much-we all really need them!!! You always have exactly the right content at the right time, not to mention it’s very high-quality and easy to understand!!! I’ve been putting together ideas for a huge manga project. I have interesting characters, a very developed plot and several arcs, a good art style-so basically all the fundamentals to make a pretty decent manga. However, I’m not sure whether I should release it myself or go to a publisher. I will be drawing the manga in the traditional manga style, but I’m not sure where to post it. Will webtoons be fine for that?? I haven’t seen a lot of manga-style webtoons on there. I’m just totally unsure how to market my work…what do you recommend?? I’m still new to your videos, so I’ll be watching each of them!!! So in conclusion, what’s the best strategies for self marketing, where should I post my traditional-style manga, and how can I get the best outcome of the promotions and marketing???
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to write all of that I really appreciate it! To answer your question, I feel like the first thing I should talk about is the importance of a social media presence. You should 100% be on Instagram, Twitter, tiktok, youtube, etc. You don't have to commit to ALL of them, but focusing on a few is HUGE Sadly, in today's day and age, you have to sell yourself before you sell your works. Nobody really cared about my stuff until I started doing this KZbin thing. Now that I'm published, I can see the clear difference between me and my fellow artists. While some of the artists published alongside of me are WAY better than I am, I've had the most opportunities to work with brands and other companies because of this social media influence. As far as posting your traditional style manga, Webtoon and Tapas are good for that. I always tell people not to assume you're going to become famous by just uploading to webtoons, that's unrealistic. Every platform is oversaturated and the only people making money are people who already have a social media influence. I would say for now just post to webtoon and tapas and promote the hell out of it. You can always send it off to publishers. From my own experience, publishers like to see stuff you are working on because it shows them you can put the work in. Some publishers value creator owned content which means they might just publish the story you're already making. Other publishers might like to read it and then ask you to make something exclusively with them As far as promotion and marketing, that's what social media is for. Whenever I post a new video, I promote it on facebook, amino, reddit, insta, twitter, etc The louder you shout the more people you might reach. Just being consistent is the biggest thing though It isn't easy. It takes a lot of patience. Shares and comments are the factors that help you grow the most. Like I said before, it sucks that you have to sell your personality first but that's just how the industry works right now. Once people like you they will be more willing to give your work a chance. Hope that helps! Best of luck!

I'm planning to make a comic, but I'm not sure which style I should go for. Webcomics seem simpler to panel and make since they are in a line, but also I don't think you can convert a webcomic into a traditional format for printing and revenue right? Do webcomics have a chance of keeping up in terms of profit with comics and manga which can be distributed online as well as traditionally?
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great question! From what I've been told by other artists, making the comic in the traditional format first and THEN converting it into webtoon vertical format is much easier. If you start with a vertical scroll format it's much harder to prepare it for print It has been done before though and webtoons like Solo Leveling were released for print. I think webcomics can keep up with traditional comics and manga, but it's much harder With print format comics and manga you can always work with publishers and magazines to help promote your work. With webcomics, you have to pretty much start from nothing and build your fanbase Both are kind of similar in the sense that you need to be using social media to grow your audience! For ease of life, I'd recommend making your comic in the traditional format first and then taking the panels and making it work for webtoons! Hope that helps!

@@MonitorComics thanks! That was an incredibly helpful answer! I have one more follow up question. I've read that manga is read by a much larger population than traditional comics, even rivaling comics in western populations. I know manga goes right to left due to how the flow of written Japanese works, so it doesn't make much sense to do right to left if you write in English. But is it worth going right to left in order to appeal to what most manga/comic readers are used to? Also would the paneling direction and whether it's marketed as "English manga" vs "comics" have any influence on whether japanese animation companies might be interested in adaptations?
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 2 жыл бұрын
@@HuebertEllowit-LOL For your first question, if you plan to work with a publisher at some point you have to make your work read in your language's reading style. In my case I am in the US and speak English so my manga reads from left to right. If i made mine read from right to left no publisher would consider it You can be influenced by the manga art style and panelling though! As far as Japanese companies adapting it, I wouldn't even worry about that Most Japanese companies only adapt japanese works. Western companies like Netflix and others have adapted anime style content though. I just tell people not to worry about it because its a far off dream, focus on your comic or manga first!

I can definitely use the 6 sentence elevator pitch for Saturday AM's next Summer of Manga on a potential new one-shot mecha manga. I think you may have already brought it up, but I don't think me saying this would be too redundant: self-publishing is pretty much building up your own resume from the ground up, and there's no one out there to promote your work except for you. So with that in mind, your art should pretty much be consistently good in order to grow your own fanbase and give yourself more exposure(the same is applied to your work and release schedule).

thanks this helps a lot. I have a question, is the process the same for turning your manga into an anime?
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad this video could be helpful! As far as your question goes, the answer is no From what I've heard, showrunners like Butch Hartman (The Fairly Oddparents, Danny Phantom) worked in the animation industry and pitched his series ideas at board meetings For anime, unless you are in Japan, the chances of your manga being adapted into an anime are incredibly low. The only time I've seen non Japanese manga artists have their art adapted is with Tony Valente, the French Mangaka of "Radiant" Even then, Tony Valente worked through a Japanese company and worked in both France and Japan. There ARE anime-style studios in the west. Netflix is a perfect example of a studio that is beginning to adapt the anime art style with series like Castlevania From my understanding, animation companies will reach out to publishers if they are interested in adapting their work. The publisher then has to agree to the terms of the deal which could include revoking all rights to the property For an individual creator working without a Publisher, those odds are even lower. I personally haven't heard of any indie manga artists who have had their work adapted by an anime studio For that reason, i always tell people interested in making comics and manga to worry about making comics and manga If you're so worried about an anime then go to school for animation and learn to animate it yourself. That's my take on it though. As a published manga artist, I believe it's not worth my time to worry about anime Hopefully that helps! Best of luck!

Your story idea sounds awesome! Publishing isn't easy. You may get rejected a million times before getting lucky. That's just the business. Self publishing is more straightforward but a lot more work on your end As far as getting sued, you don't have to worry about that unless you blatantly plagiarized something. No idea is 100 percent original As far as getting your stuff stolen, once you are published yo

Good video! i have a question: is there some way i can publish manga made with traditional art?
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to check this video out and leaving a comment! The answer is yes and no. YES in the sense that you can draw your manga traditionally. There are plenty of artists who do that No in the sense that in this day and age, it is expected for your comics and manga to be digitally lettered, unless your hand lettering is good Marvel and DC still have artists who do hand lettering, but many artists choose to add the text in with their computer. Any drawing or photo editing software can get the job done If you choose to draw your pages traditionally and add the lettering in digitally, you will need to scan your pages. Hope that makes sense! Best of luck!

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! I am currently a Graphic Design major in my Senior year at my university. Graphic Design is more focused on logos, social media graphics, print flyers, vectors, and things like that. There is SOME animation mixed in, like motion graphics and GIFS, but from my experience, it's not really drawing-based. I personally don't know what Digital design is so I cant offer much advice. It sounds like Web Design but not sure haha. If you want to improve your drawings I'd recommend fine art classes. ANY art course can help you with making manga though. My photography courses taught me a LOT about framing, camera angles, lighting, and stuff like that. English courses are also great for improving your writing! Hope that helps! best of luck in college!

Thanks for taking the time to watch! Unfortunately, just posting a comic online isn't enough to build an audience these days, unless you are SUPER SUPER GOOD ya know. You definitely CAN get a few fans that way, but with sites like Webtoons, Tapas, MangaPlus Creators, etc there are millions of other people doing the exact same thing. Social media is HUGE in every art field, so I'd recommend using stuff like instagram, twitter, tiktok, youtube, twitch, etc to promote yourself and your work One of the quickest ways to build an audience is to grow on social media. Unfortunately I am plagued with creativity and by that I mean my mind is constantly thinking of new ideas, like stories. I have up to about ten different stories now and I am struggling to focus on just one. My newest one is called Pritong Pansit, and it's about a guy called the Teriyaki God who can manipulate the molecular structure of teriyaki sauce and create it with the right ingredients, like a water-bender but with that instead. Silly idea, I know, but I got it as an idea after listening to a song with the same name by Joji. I have this thing now where whenever I listen to music, I have to make a reference to the song I'm listening to, similar to how Hirohiko Araki made references to music with his characters.

I have a video that addresses this called "How To Stick With One Story Idea," hopefully it will be able to help a bit! I am also someone who has a lot of ideas, and that is GREAT. But to be blunt, publishers want to see that you actually get things done and dont have a bunch of incomplete projects It's a tough balance, but if you go the self publishing route there is more freedom to explore all of your ideas!

All you need to do is upload your files to a print on demand site like Amazon and you're good. The company will print books whenever someone buys one As far as working with a traditional publisher, it becomes a lot harder. A few magazines I have worked with in the past had an age limit of 18 for applications. Every magazine is different though so you would have to do some research individually Hopefully that helps! I'm currently working on a series I've been planning for 4 years I just never had the courage to execute cuz I didn't trust my skills back then. I just started making this manga this year. It's called Mights of the Unknown The story takes place in 2047 where humanity's population dropped down to 40% due to the disaster that happened in 2018. A meteor struck the earth awakening all of the creatures from stories and myths, the meteorite nor the creatures weren't the reason why humanity started to fall. The humans themselves are the reason. The meteor sent out a burst of energy all over the earth giving every human abilities, they gained magic. While people were successful in controlling their new abilities others had accidents where they endanger the people around them, others choose to use their power for evil which resulted to losing many lives. The main character of this story is Emmit, a school dropout who spends his life being a pain in the ass while also dealing with schizophrenia as he sees a pitch black person always follows him anywhere. One night Emmit dreams of a second catastrophe that's about to occur within a few months. As emmit wakes up from his nightmare the shadow speaks to him "you don't have much time" The skies suddenly shines and trumpets could be heard from all over the globe. Judgement day is coming And so emmit goes on a journey to seek the gods and hope they might have the answer for the world's salvation. That's pretty much how I can sum it up I'm making a one-shot manga right now too

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I don't have experience in that field, but I assumed it would be difficult. If they do well, other series may get a similar book deal Because of that, I imagine it's hard for a self publishing artist with no connections or reputation to get their books into bookstores Local comic book shops may be a different story, but like I said I am not 100% sure about the logistics Hope that helps!
