As promised, part two of my Marie Antoinette "stawberry dress" aka "church dress" aka "chapel dress". Last time, I made the hat and mitts from the movie. This time, I'm making the dress! I show how I draft the pattern, troubleshoot the pattern, sew it together, trim it. Then let's go visit the chapel at Versailles - digitally of course.

@@Sewstine Have you ever tried wearing gloves when working with this type of brocade? I recall my grandma had mentioned wearing gloves with certain brocades but I can't remember now if she said they were silk or cotton. I don't know how much she dealt with brocades that were that grabby and loose on a regular basis (I recall pictures of traditional wedding dresses in progress at the shop looking like your fabric, but those weren't as common as their regular one day tailored 3 piece suit orders).

I am amazed you made the dress despite fabric possibly snagging or ruining the design of the strawberries because of the loose threads. Im not criticizing you whatsoever on your work because it is amazing but I would like to offer a helpful suggestion to anybody else who will be working on fabric like this to make the Marie Antoinette strawberry dress is to make sure everything is fully hemmed and lined because you really dont wanna ruin a fabric that pretty and that expensive. I love how you showed how you hemmed the skirt with silk taffeta which is a really smart way to do a historical hemming method on these types of gowns especially on fabrics like this. I imagine the original dress being hemmed/lined with a white silk taffeta since the background color is white. Great job Sewstine!!! Keep up the amazing work!

*completes absolute museum quality masterpiece in silk taking weeks of work and years of research and planning* "And thus the dress was done!" *said in the most chill, laid back cool imaginable, a state of calm known only to great artists* Thank you for sharing your art, your journey in these projects, and process of working through setbacks. It was the example I needed in college, and I know there's a generation of theatre technicians and fashion design students who have a leg up on how to keep cool when problems arise (because every project has something go sideways) and step back to find creative solutions to any number of bumps and curves in the road. This video popped up at just the right time today to help me calm the heck down after a mess of a day. I really hope that all the good things that come from your videos (like folks like me getting almost a half hour escape from a bad day and students finding ways to cope with the stress and lack of directions in certain projects) comes back to you tenfold. 🧡

What a wonderful dress! You made it so beautifully. As a random aside, I am so envious of you not sweating much! I sweat like a horse! I know the phrase is usually “sweat like a pig” but (today’s random nerdy fact 😂) pigs don’t sweat! They keep cool by wallowing instead.

This fabric is called Banarsi or atlus in the part of the world I come from. It’s quite cheap in the polyester variety but quite expensive in pure silk. It’s mostly available in floral patterns though. They always cut the threads at the back from motif to motif. Excellent gown! I love all your work!

To clarify, what you are calling the "original Rubelli in silk.viscose" is their "reaimagining" (their own words) of the original which was certainly in 100% silk, so you did the right thing getting 100% silk to be authentic to the era if not to the modern costume. The lisere weave would have also been typical for the era. For anyone interested in the fabric, occasionally there are striped silk liseres listed on etsy and ebay and there's also a Napoleonic Bee silk lisere (Scalamandre) which would be fabulous as a gown.

What a glorious dress! I am so happy to watch your lovely dressmaking videos while working on a reticule sized bag of brocaded roses. Even though our fabric content & appearances ,as well as the project size & length are different, the tiny similarities help me feel like I am there with you, creating more beauty & more fun things. Thank you for sharing such a well done video of such a precious & resplendent project! I'm working with pink velveteen & brocaded
