Don’t worry Tina! I take a lot of pride in my baking and whenever I’ve tried Sally’s recipes they always turned out dense and not great. I recommend Cupcake Jemma’s ultra simple recipes. They are foolproof and so good.

Hello Tina! 😊 Baker here 🙋🏽‍♀️👩🏽‍🍳 I can say you did an amazing job for a first timer in baking. 👍 It seems like you really prepared for it and you know the basics. Your decorating was great and your hands were pretty steady while icing the cake. 🎂 Just some tips 💡: • Do not over-mix the batter as flour tends to create gluten when over-mixed. Thus, the cake will become dense when baked. Putting the mixer on alternating low-medium speed would help avoid this. • Icing can get a little runny, especially with cream cheese frosting if not kept in the refrigerator, so I suggest that before decorating the cakes, place the frosting in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes, then remix it by hand when you’re ready to decorate. • If you don’t want your cake to be super sweet, you can reduce the icing sugar in the frosting recipe and adjust it to your own preference. • After crumb coating the cake, put it in the refrigerator first so that the crumbs will be locked in place when you put your second coat of icing. • When transferring the cake from the turning plate to a pan, you can use 2 palette knifes placed in an X position to support the base of the cake. • Always, sift or whisk your dry ingredients to avoid lumps on your batter/icing. I recommend looking up a complete cake recipe if you are unsure how to combine cake flavors, fillings, and frostings. Cream cheese frosting is notorious for being quite sweet. I like to combine a sweet outside frosting with a more tart and fruity inside layer to balance out the sweetness.

Very cute cakes for first tries, the cherry was my favourite🍒🍒🍒 I hope you end up baking more! Constructive criticism: The frosting could have been slightly firmer... did you chill it before applying? If so, definitely needed more sugar to firm up. Sweet cake plus very sweet frosting does end up tasting only sweet. If you end up baking more of these cuties, try the leftover cake bits with frosting _before_ decorating. This way you can add (between layers) something like a tart fresh fruit to overly sweet, or a jam for not sweet enough combination.
