Yet another great video, your hands on attempts to solve problems are inspirational. Also loved the old school tobacco tin storage system. I'm 63 and that was my father's system. I will be honest with you May. I'm not a fan of yoga or folk singing. But I am a fan of a gung ho attitude to life, and you've got this in abundance. Not sure if you are looking for another soul mate in life, after your nine year prior experience. But you and George seem to gell quite nicely. All the best in all you do, I will be following.

May, I just found your channel. I've recently purchased a 1986 Trawler that is currently in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. (Seattle area) I just want to say your attitude is SO wonderful, I just had to work through some bilge pump issues of my own, and I dare say, I was slightly less enthusiastic than you were. You sure are making the canal boat life look lovely! Well done!

As a Mechanic I can’t say I agree with letting the Gearbox break completely before you get it fixed. Unfortunately doing that could lead to a lot more problems which would be even more expensive. There are other possibilities for the gearbox recon ( it doesn’t have to be a Boatyard or a marina where you have the work done). At a £1000 it might even be worth sourcing a engine and gearbox ( see about the possibility of getting sponsored by a company that supplies electric motors ( remember lots of companies are developing electric motors for the canal boat and boats industry and they are looking for people who will work with them on getting their popularity out there ). Electric motors have the bonus of being smaller and more powerful and more efficient and less maintenance. I follow a few Canal Boat sites and I think they are all thinking about the electric route for the future and you could always sell your old engine to recover some of the costs 🤷‍♂️. I’m not sure when Fossil Fuel engines are going to be banned on the Canal but the cost of fuel is going to skyrocket as the date of ban for vehicles looms and so it would definitely be something to consider sooner rather than later 🤷‍♂️.

That gearbox is a real quandary. You know your finances so if sorting it is out of the question, then so be it. But at the moment the swarf may be coming from a component such as a bearing that is designed to wear and so may be easy to replace. But a complete failure could damage components that are less easy or impossible to replace like a shaft and associated gears, necessitating a complete gearbox replacement or major work. It's worth asking around about gearboxes that have been recovered from other narrowboats. On their narrowboat journeys, NB vloggers often comment on apparently abandoned boats. I assume those boats eventually get scrapped and their components are made available via 2nd hand routes. But there are relatively few narrowboats so they probably get snapped up by engineering companies who will overhaul them for selling on to narrowboaters like yourself. Keeping in touch with several boatyards and NB engineering companies could be worth your while anyway

Seems the stuffing box is leaking through the gland packing. If you do not have some spare PTFE flax gland packing rope, then get some. Measure shaft diameter and inside diameter of the stuffing box, that should give you the size of packing rope you need. If one work carefully, adding just one and a half turn new packing can be done easily while in the water. Slowly release tension on the screws and see if water enter more and if not, work qiuckly by having all ready and put in(There is normally a seal on the other side of the stuffing box, preventing mass water coming in.. . On the gearbox, its 50/50. Longer it runs, maybe more damage and more expensive. If you have the manual and compare bearings and gears as well as spacers, one can with fair accuracy identify which part is failing by comparing the type and color of metal present. Maybe for now, change the oil and cross fingers. whatever floats always have the final say when one opens the piggy bank.Super cool channel and be safe.

May - Please watch the "Cruising the Cut" KZbin video where he had his transmission replaced. My question is there someone in the UK that has rebuilt transmissions on the shelf. These should cost roughly 50% the cost of new. Your repair service could simply perform a swap. You would save money on repair hours. Just a thought...

Hi Now you have identified that you have bearing trouble in the gearbox it would be wise to repair it sooner rather than later. If you wait till it packs in totally then it will be more expensive to sort out. Atm you may only need a set of new bearings if left you will most likely damage the gears as well, bearings are cheaper than gears and shafts

Just discovered your channel, very nice, concerning your water ingress, that fitting is called a packing gland, inside it where you put the grease is a rope type material that is pressed in by the outer flange, with those 2 studs and nuts, you should be able to tighten those nuts a little and possibly decrease the amount of water coming in. if they are as far as they can go you may need to have that redone next time your out of the water. I agree with your friend concerning the gear box, changing the oil will help prolong it, those metal bits circulating in your gearbox will wear it out faster and faster Cheers

May - don't worry too much about your bilges. It's way better to have some water in them, than for them to be dry as a dry bilge often indicates that your shaft packing is too tight (so no water gets past) but that can mean it's wearing your shaft away - and shafts ain't cheap to replace. If you're concerned about rust I'd suggest greasing the shaft up to stop any seepage (usually until you next put her in gear and turn the shaft) then painting the bilge plate. Use either a direct to rust paint like Hammerite or people like Craftmaster do specific bilge paints (a fetching shade of bluey grey!) Glad you sorted your wiring out though. 👍

If you have River Canal Rescue Gold cover they will cover the first £1000 of parts of repairs like gearbox, alternator, engine parts etc... Depending on the your choice a recon box is around £800 to buy, and a new box is around £2000 for a Beta Marine, you can sometimes repair your current box a lot cheaper, however if you delay and keep driving the boat you might end up damaging the gear box beyond repair, forcing you to have to buy a recon box. When bearings go your binding metal on metal. Mine went on my second voyage out, it was making a squeaky noise like a slipping belt, and every time I checked the belts they where tight, then when I started boat it would be fine for sat 30 mins and start squeaking again. I pulled over, called RCR and they came out and diagnosed it as a big end bearing on back of box that had failed. After I had a recon box fitted, the engine was noisy again, turned out where the previous owner had been using it with a failing gear box, it had worn down part of the prop shaft , so I needed a new one, The I had a new prop shaft fitted the stern tube was found to be damaged. Basically my box could of been repaired and replaced for around £600, however as boat was driven / sailed on a bad box the box could not be repaired, so I ended up with a reconditioned unit by not repairing sooner, my prop shaft needed to be replaced, along with the stern tube. You may be fine to keep going, then again it could end up being a false economy by delaying. Its a bit like a wheel bearing on a car, it could go 100 miles before finally failing or it could gp 5 miles down the road then fail. and when the boat box fails will you be near an engineer, or marina, or stuck in the middle of nowhere. PPS: Liked the video, very well put together, you seem to be a natural on camera, looking forward to your next one

Ref the water tank, there should be a breather hole for the tank other than the inlet point, otherwise when hose is connected you'll get a pressure build up in the tank, hence air escaping when you remove the hose.

When getting a reconditioned gearbox they either provide a reconditioned gearbox to you and take yours (in order to recondition and sell on later) or they recondition your one. Either way this is usually subject to a surcharge. Anything they find wrong with the internals which isn’t seals and bearings, I.e. damaged gears, you will get charged extra for (outside of the initial quote they gave you). I used to work at a gearbox reconditioning garage ( for cars, but the concept is essentially the same) Another alternative is maybe looking for a used gearbox that’s still in good condition or at least better condition than the one you currently have, it might work out a bit cheaper and give the narrowboat a bit more life.

some water tanks have overflows, and water pouring out side of boat is a sign tank is full, second method, both my neighbour and I have tanks that clonk / bang loudly when the tank is full. I monitor my tank with a dip stick, same as I do for the diesel tank. bulge pump never completely drains sump, always leaves about inch in bottom, this has two reasons, first float switch needs a certain amount of water to activate pump, and second reason, there is no one way valve on the pump so soon as the pump shuts down al the water remaining in the pipe then washes back down to the pump from gravity, sometimes using the manual override switch gets more water out if you hold button down. you could fit a one way valve just after the pump, you can also get pumps that virtually drain sump and leave less in the sump. etc...

Your temperory and easier solution to your "moist bulge" problem/issue is probably to invest in a wet and dry machine, each day you could make it a routine to hook it up and suck out any moisture/water you have out of your current tuperware container you have down there, this would be a far more efficient way of getting excess water out, without the hassel of sqeezing the tuperware container in and out of the tricky position it is currently in.

Go for a rebuilt gear box with a warranty ...if the cost is much better than a new one.

Don’t be stuck in a flight of locks over the Easter weekend as the cut gets busier when the gearbox dies. There’s lots of good advice in the comments, best get it sorted over losing sleep worrying about how much longer it will last.

Thanks for the advice! Not going anywhere for the holidays! Safer to stay moored up somewhere regardless of the gearbox!

Change the oil in the gearbox and put some thicker oil in and it will be good for a while

The gearbox will expire at the worst possible time. Moor up somewhere close to where it can be repaired and get it done. My gearbox expired 2 weeks ago and I knew it had issues. Don't be like me. Good luck.

Hello, gearbox! Basically the marine gearbox constantly turns inside when idling, the clutch is inside it connected to the main lever, you need somebody to unbolt it and look inside to see if it's a clutch or bearing problem, actually there much simpler than a car 6 speed, but unlike the car where the clutch is on the flywheel before the gearbox the small wet clutch is incorporated, the cause is mainly when you use the reverse as a brake, clunk! kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5TVo5ena7ySn7c A link I found may explain this, you may have clutch and bearing problems, if you find the right person it can be fixed for half the price of a replacement, cheers John

@@wellbeingonwater Well what i meant was, your water tank vent is clogged, i can't believe that there isn't one, and that's why it takes so long to fill your tank, the more i have seen of your videos, the more i wish you had someone like me in your cirkel :D i love fixing stuff and i would say that you just have a lot of small things that would take no time to fix, but maybe because there are so many small things, it's overwhelming. I do really love your energy and willingness to try, without the comfort of knowing how to do it, instead of just not trying. best wishes :D
