About Me
“The world needs more makers.” ~ RoyerX
Being from a family of creatives whose motto was to produce not to consume was etched into Kyle from a very early age and being educated at home gave him many opportunities to work hard at his own creative pursuits.
At eighteen, Kyle graduated high school and two weeks later received his Journeyman Smith Stamp and a rare double win of the George Peck Award and Bill Moran Award, “the 18-year-old prodigy”, “the blazing bladesmith” was what BLADE Magazine labeled him. Following that victory in November, 2009 BLADE Magazine ran a special five page spread “That Young and That Good”, the article went on to say “His ability to masterfully execute new designs, processes and artistic damascus patterns is remarkable. In spite of his young age, his fit/finish and attention to detail is representative of some of todays most known and sought after makers.” He was one of two to achieve Mastersmith by the age of twenty. His knives and his skills are highly sought after worldwide.
In the early years, if you weren’t at a knife show or a hammer-in, learning from the masters, information was hard to find, there was no online content and only a few books and videos, so it was a lot of trial and error in the knife shop. Kyle is passionate to teach makers his more than fourteen years of experience.
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” We hope we can inspire you on your maker’s journey.
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

stupid question, but is there a reason there is different thickness in the material to begin with? bloody awesome stuff by the way

Beautiful work as always. Howcome the sheet metal doesn't weld onto the billet?
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks 4 жыл бұрын
Jaco Van den Berg when setting the initial weld of the billet in his press, he doesn’t press from the sides, only the top and bottom. This means no weld is set between the billet and the sheet steel

Do you put anything on the sheet metal to prevent forge welding to your billet?

A big question that I have hard time finding answer for is: The image Kyle has in his mind, is it exactly how the finished blade comes out or is there always a level of exploration when the etching is revealed? If anyone knows this your comments are welcome, cause I am really wondering

Hey Rami great question. BOTH. Most of the time Kyle has a particular look he is targeting and nails it. Sometimes he has a vision for where he wants to end up but gives himself a lil liberty to have a small adventure with the pattern. I remember when Kyle was just starting pattern welded damascus. Shortly afterwards I remember Kyle explaining what the pattern was going to look like when finished. It blew that he could see inside the billet and know what was going on inside. The Man of Steel can see inside the billet 🤭 Glad you’re here my friend Dad

im curious..what happens to the slag that flakes off the billet while hammering? is it just waste and if so, how do you dispose of it? it seems theres a lot of it that comes together after a while.

Really nice work! Would you say the press is more efficient for forge welding than the power hammer?
@KyleRoyerKnives
@KyleRoyerKnives 4 жыл бұрын
Hey skull Good question Not sure. The press might not distort the pattern as much That will certainly make a great vid As soon as we acquire 160# power hammer we should have a smash-off Thanks bones Team Royer

Kyle, i noticed you had the layers not alternating in the billet. What is the reasoning behind that?
