This week I had to go up the mast to fit my lazy jacks. I have no harness so had to go back to a technique I used for years since when I was a kid rappelling down some cliffs.
I managed to do so safely and the temporary lines were in place so that I can have an idea how much spectra I need to order.
For the lazy bag, since I have no Sunbrella, I decided to use my sail cover...

Those Ronstan sheaveless thingies work brilliantly on lazyjacks. I used them a few years back on a junk rig and they were excellent. I'm impressed with your ability to keep your tone of voice the same whilst using your harness. I might have squeaked a bit...

I stumbled across your channel earlier this evening and after I seen how laid back you are and how you fix things yourself rather than throwing money at the situation I had to subscribe and watch all your videos!! Boat is looking great!! Especially after those green stickers were removed and all the other projects you've done. The Kingfisher are nice boats and seem to be well made just like the contessa small sailboats.

Thanks Ben! Kingfisher 30, like many of its era, was built in the time where they didn't have a computer to simulate and tell you what is the minimum hull thickness so that the whole thing just wont break in half! So they built it with a huge safety factor...in particular below the waterline. The layout is not my favorite but I'll take care of that at some point...😁 And the K30 does have the narrow beam, pointy bow as the Contessa, Elizabethan 30, Sadler 32....

Three weeks ago I just spent two hours aloft. With a good rappelling rock climbing rig on. Well it took me 4 hours to get circulation back in my to my legs after that.. and if I wouldn't have borrowed that harness I was going to have to do the rope trick that you you did. I would have made it lasted 30 minutes up the pole. Rope harness has absolutely hurt after a little bit. And I'm too old for that anymore. However today is kids don't even have common sense anymore,, so you got to get up there and do it yourself.

Good idea on repurposing that sail cover. I like the idea you have with the loops instead of drilling the mast for cheek blocks for the upper lazy jack lines.

That harness brings back memories of school climbing trips, it wasn't comfortable when I was a 120lb teenager, I dread to think what it would be like at my current 200lbs. Free Range Sailing used those same shocks on their lazy jacks. Their refit of Mirrool is a great blueprint for fitting out a small cruising boat, one I plan to follow some day.

Hey Ray! My house is a small 60 years old country house. I demolished most inside walls to create an open plan house, and slowly rebuild almost everything alone during a 5 year period! Pillars, beams, floors, plumbing, electrics, etc... still unfinished tho! 😅

@SV Sea Rambler 60 years old?? My house here in the midwest of America is 100 years old this year. It's had all new wiring, plumbing, windows, siding, etc. And it cost me less than half what a newer home would cost and it's got character which makes it feel like a home when you walk in. You are definitely a craftsman or what we call a jack of all trades and master of none. But we know enough to get the job done right and enough to get us in trouble.

Great plan you have their Teo🤙 Mind If I borrow some ideas from you?? PS, it's time you learn some sewing machine work my friend😀. I got a 1940's Scottish built black Singer sewing machines with hand crank, and it stitches 8 layers of Sunbrella with Gutermann thread easy peasy...try one out. Good job my friend 👏

Well, I have tried some makeshift rapel methods myself at military academy, and still have to practice others as a firefighter. But also as a climber I aks, come on, why don't you just go to Decathlon and buy the cheapest harness?? For the sake of your balls! 🤣 I'm pretty sure I'll take one to my boat as the season starts, I have two extra. BTW I just started sewing a new sprayhood with professional help and instructions, fabric projects can be just as interesting as plywood and epoxy, lots to learn. Keep posting, cheers! 🙂

Hi Istvan! The secret is to lean back as much as you can so that the rope spreads the pressure on your back and the back of your thighs and not on your groin/balls! 😅

I have a climbing harness. Always used one. I've done a bit of racing and was a teacher and the typical RYA - trained sailor makes such a fuss about climbing to my mind. Lol. I spent my childhood up trees, my youth doing (sometimes drunken) free climbing and did indoor climbing. I still climb anything any time. But my mast has folding mast steps :-)
@SVsearambler

Yes we did spend our childhood up and down cliffs, trees and what not. Nowadays you can't even suggest that to a kid without the carebears jumping on you! anyway... I wish I had steps on my mast tho! Maybe a future project! 😉

Genius idea with the old sail cover. I really should try that. But the foot of my sail needs to be in the track (Have you a sail cut to be loose-footed?) I'll also need holes for reef lines...
@SVsearambler
@SVsearambler Жыл бұрын
Hi Kirsty! My sail was fixed foot but I sent it for repair and to be turned into a loose foot. I will also need to cut holes for reefing lines but have to secure the hardware for it to the boom first. There's no arrangement at all for reefing the sail on Sea Rambler.

@@SVsearambler ah right! I was so surprised when I first came to Germany and really none of the smaller (20-35ft) boats have reefing at all. You see them all going sideways and fighting and rounding up when it gets breezy. I've always got 2 set up. "Flatter is faster" as they used to say to me. I wasn't much of a racer, but I remember that!
@SVsearambler
@SVsearambler Жыл бұрын
Around here the traditional boats had no reefs either! That always made thing they were all nuts! 😁 Nowadays they are starting to have reefing lines on their sails. On the racing dinghies and modern cruisers/Racers flatter is indeed faster, with their plumb bows and flatter bottoms. On old boats like the Kingfisher heeling actually increases the waterline length allowing for higher top hull speed. And the old Racing boats used to have a limit on waterline length so you would see really long bows and sterns out of the water. But once the boat heeled they gained almost 50% more waterline length and speed!
@kirstypollock6811
@kirstypollock6811 Жыл бұрын
@@SVsearambler cool! Told you I wasn't much of a racer! Yes waterline length matters I guess that's why all the old classic racers with the ridiculous overhangs? I'm not sure about where my 1979 Marieholm fits, but with her huge main, I reef early, like on the old Sigma 38s we used to belt up and down and across the English channel in.
