Generally an auxiliary rudder should have about 40% of the area of the boat's main rudder. I found this site. It comes from The Pirate Bay org. This is a direct link to download John Letcher's "Self-steering for sailing craft". This book has become a classic and was a great resource for designing and building my own windvane self steering. I have made three different systems on my current and two previous boats.
