Underrated? It was a pretty mediocre game. It may be underrated because virtually no one has heard of it, and it's better than ... that. I got it when it came out. It was a Wipeout clone with SSX style tricks thrown in. The soundtrack was solid, but very much like Wipeout. The track design was ... interesting. The gravity defying tracks were interesting. But, unless you played enough to memorize each track you were flying blind with no real visual cues to work with (which is critical racing). The game wasn't especially challenging, aside from the weird but interesting track design, and I don't recall needing to memorize the tracks. I played for a handful of hours and enjoyed it but definitely didn't beat it. The song that played on the title screen was a pretty big hit at the time (If I Survive by Hybrid). The problem with this being Wipeout + SSX is that both of those games were better. Wipeout was a cultural touchstone in PS1 gaming in about 1995 when it came out (5-6 years earlier). It was so popular it was used in the movie Hackers (one of Angelina Jolie's first movies ... this was the game they played in the insanely unrealistic high school hangout/nightclub). It was also so popular they sold the soundtrack to the game. The soundtrack itself was so popular they made a sequel to the soundtrack ... not a soundtrack to a different game. Just another music album with Wipeout branding. And then there's SSX. When the PS2 came out the only 2 games worth owning were SSX and Starfighter, and SSX was an original game that spawned a very popular series with SSX Tricky being one of the best games of that generation of gaming. This game was very much on par with Hypersonic Xtreme on PS2 (fine and inoffensive). Even 20 years ago when these games were fairly new most people had never heard of or played either of these two games.

I love this game so much it became part of my identity growing up. The OST launched a whole personal phase of discovery in terms of the music genre. Such a beautiful game. The story the characters. The levels. The dynamics. I completed the game to 99% because I loved it so much. Thank you Santa Monica Studios. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😌

I still have this game. It had a great deal of potential to being one of the greatest futuristic racers out there, next to the Extreme G titles, if only the devs spent more time hand crafting the maps better than what was included in the game. They didn't craft them to be used with every character in the selection menu, efficiently. If you wanted to beat the game, you'd have to choose between 3 different characters while the rest were only good for a few maps but horrible for other maps, despite high skill control of them. This was due to the nature of how acrobats were important to execute as much as possible, in order to have enough boost to help you stay on the map (avoiding skidding, which could cost you placement in a race). The paths at times were way too narrow and turns too small with blockades that were hard to read, due to the visual styling and colors. The game looked great, don't get me wrong, but some of it's questionable map layout choices, hurt it's longevity, imho. Kinetica had a remarkable idea behind it. Very unique and I loved playing it, but only with like two characters. I would love to see this be remade today, but only if passion is involved. The cover art was the best and the tunes were very nice.

E3 2001 had so many bangers, both classics and underrated gems. Got to take a look at the entire PS2 showcase on a Playstation Underground demo disc, along with some demos. So many underrated BANGERS that year. Soul Reaver 2, Klonoa 2, Kinetica, Okage: Shadow King, Ico, etc. Had to grab Kinetica as soon as it came out. Suffered a lot trying to unlock all 3 secret characters but I finally did it. Amazing game, wish it got more love.

I first saw this game advertised in an Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine back in the 90s. I used to draw these type of characters with exoskeleton suits like these with wheels 🛞 and sleek. It took me forever to figure out what game it was and alas here I am.

It is, only downside is that it can be pretty tough, but as an F-Zero vet, I’m used to it. The soundtrack is also one of the grooviest on the PS2. I listen to it all the time when starting a rave in VRChat. Not bad for the first game from Santa Monica Studio, no joke, this was the first game they made. The original God of War even ran on Kinetica’s engine You can get it on PS4 and PS5 for about $15.

@@thejman5683 It is a challenge, and I really appreciate it. It doesn't hold your hand, it's intense and it lives up to it. The physics are quite good, especially for that early on. Even the graphics are impressive for 2001. The soundtrack is absolutely bitching. Every aspect is dripping with style, it's so over-the-top. I also get some Battle Angel Alita Motorball vibes from it, which isn't something I really see at all.
