mikesinventions.etsy.com This video shows you how to create a pattern that allows you to lay out the sections needed for a spherical shape for something like a parachute, hot-air balloon, or beach ball. You will learn some trigonometry and basic geometry that's required for you to design your perfect ball shape and create a pattern that you can use to make your ball segments called gores. This could also be used to create a cover for a geodesic dome if it were made out of stretchy fabrics. This video has nothing to do with Al Gore, but there is inconvenient math.

Great video, I am embarking on making Bostonian dome awning, and your video exactly what I needed, just the music was a bit distracting, but really thank you :)

Hey Esther. The math and template doesn’t account for overlap and seams. I’d add 1/4-1/2” extra.

Nice tutorial! Any advice on how you'd do something similar for a tear-drop shape? I.e. so the top section is as per this tutorial (half a sphere) but the bottom half is elongated? I'm thinking along the lines of a hot air balloon type of shape. Thanks! :-)

How would I calculate a semi-hemispherical parachute using only the top 1/4 of the sphere?

Thank you for this. I need to help my students with designing a parachute and one group want to make a dome so this is perfect. When sewing the pieces together how much overlap should I allow. Do I need to add a seam allowance to the template or it will be ok to overlap the seams as they are?

Hi Mike, I used this video in the past and it worked great when my radius in the top view matched the radius of the arc in the front view. How would I create my gore if the top view radius and the front view radius are different? I believe what I'm trying to make is an ellipsoid. Do you have a video for this?
@MikesInventions
@MikesInventions 7 ай бұрын
Hey Andy. I'm glad it worked for you. I don't have a video on an ellipsoid because I've never needed to make one. You can probably download the file and modify the math slightly to account for ellipse equations. Thanks for watching, sorry I can't help with this one.

Hello Mikes, I have been looking for a bulbous 10-gores hot air balloon blueprint or schematics on the Internet and found nothing. Would you know by any luck where I could find such thing? Or a program or iOS app that could help me design one? Cheers! Thomas from Brussels, Belgium. At the moment I am making small parachutes from broken brollies fabricz :-)

Hey! I don’t know if any programs that can do that. This method works fine for the top half, then you can pick your points in a similar fashion once you know the diameters of the lower half of the balloon at certain points. It’s a bit of work, but I’m sure you’re capable. Thanks for watching!

@MikesInventions awesome work bro i downloaded your excell spreadsheet, but in the ceterline Y station your equation is (90+5 / #of splines). Is the +5 a typo?
@MikesInventions
@MikesInventions Жыл бұрын
Well hmmm. That does sure look like a typo. I’ll check it out and try and remember what I was thinking when I made that sheet. I’ll let you know and upload a good one if it’s bad.
@MikesInventions
@MikesInventions Жыл бұрын
Ok, so I downloaded it and checked, and I can't remember why I made such a complicated equation in that column, but the point was to create the numbers in 5 degree increments for the spline points. If you just type in the numbers, the sheet still works, but I can't remember why I did it the way I did, but it works that way. It's not a typo.

Why did you use this method over a compass?
@lancealotau5699
@lancealotau5699 8 ай бұрын
even better, just do a graph of the function x^2=(((pi x r x cos(y/r))/n))^2. where r is the radius of the dome you want to create, and n is the number of pieces you want to make it out of. obviously only use one half if making a half dome.

Why, for the love of God, do you have playing in the background of your video an obnoxious video game music track? It is superbly obnoxious.
