Brings back memories. This was a Weekly (usually Saturday) activity growing up on the farm back in the 70’s, first with an Arts Way, and later with a New Holland grinder mixer. Grain bin corn, bagged supplements, minerals, occasionally oats and hay. The recipe varied based on whether it was for cattle or for hogs…and their respective growth sizes. I usually didn’t mind it except during some of the colder winter days in Minnesota. Thanks for sharing Mike & Jeff. …..regards, Jeff Lee

I’m with you 100%. Everybody had either an ArtsWay or New Holland but what’s funny is I didn’t know anyone that had any other piece of New Holland equipment. Sometimes you get the extra opportunity (not really) to shell corn from the corn crib first (YAY!!). But I’d rather grind feed than clean the hog confinement or castrate hogs. That’s just nasty. I guess that’s what you call a “character builder”. Not exactly what I called it as a teenager though. I’ll skip that because it’s not family friendly. 😊

Mike did you see you didn't put the lid on the pig feeder - as a farmers kid I new exactly why you purchased the grinder $$$$ and saving it - are you going to be able to get into that paddock over the winter months to refill? or are you going to need another (new to you) pig feeder just for that period when the snow make it not as possible to do that job? - every $ counts in farming - the old 50 year old machinery is great no computers to brake just a basic machine that does it job and keeps on doing it

I was a farm kid too, and we always had an Artsway grinder/ mixer. A couple things we use to do: 1. Always had an old canvas tarp under the loading auger to catch spills, 2. Add the supplements at the same time we were grinding,( don't know if the 400's let you do that) 3. We backed the grinder to the fence to unload. After awhile the wheel ruts and a couple wood blocks got you into perfect position to swing the unload auger and empty. 4. Run the rpm just a little higher, not much though. I plugged ours when I was 14-15 yrs old and it took me almost a full day to un plug it. Ran it a little high and it never plugged again; and we ground oats/barley to ear corn for our cattle, hogs, and a few sheep. Just a thought, try them if you like.

Corn basically travels through our digestive tract relatively "untouched". Decades ago, our human digestion was not understood very well. One professor said that various researchers used to swallow marbles to see how long they took to exit. . . . or he said, you could eat some corn on the cob and see how long it took to make a chocolate bar with corn showing. 🤣 There you go.

I read somewhere that black walnuts are a natural dewormer for pigs. I have no idea how many walnuts per day might be good for pigs or how many pigs might eat, but if you know anyone that has walnut trees dropping walnuts from July through dec, I'll bet they'd be thrilled if you would take those walnuts off their lawns. (Just drive around any tree city and look for green and brown walnuts laying in the curbs and driveways.)

You can just dump that additive in the auger it won't hurt any thing The little box is for if your hand measuring each ingredient you can dump it by the pound in the back and stay away from the Hammers and that area for safety and if you drop something in it There are marks on the window that gives an estimate of how many pounds are in the grinder just put corn up to right mark and add 100 pound

You are saving on the feed costs. Hopefully the pigs keep eating well and putting weight on. Good job. The only thing not costed is labour time and fuel cost to run the tractor and feed grinder, but probably that isn't much money in total. Doing all that feed prep outside in winter won't be fun though. Presumably you have some shed space allocated to do that over the worst of the winter weather.
@chrislangel38552 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike,the feed is still to course,you need a smaller screen,you also need to adjust your self feeder you are wasting to much feed, the bottom of the feed pan needs to be 3/4 showing. Make the pigs work for the feed.

Mike... I think you got a great buy with your new piece of equipment and it seems to be doing a great job with the cow, pig and chicken feed. But I think it needs some TLC, maybe a bit of fresh paint and a wire disk on the your disk grinder to knock down the rusty spots. I look forward to seeing it used as often as possible, because as you said it will save lots of money for the ranch. It might even be a money maker for you to help your neighbors with their feed needs. You mentioned in the initial video when you got it that they are not too common in your area so probably not many of them around. Other ranchers might want to save some money too. You would need to figure out how much fuel it takes plus the maintenance and how much your time would be worth to make feed for other people.
