I like that he doesnt waste time talking, he simply talks WHILE doing it unlike many of the videos where they do 3 mins of demo and 10 mins of talking!

First off... thanks! About the smoke, it is kind of a struggle to keep it on the meat for the first day or so. ... yes, you do have to move the tripod some. Once the outer layer of meat is dry, you no longer need to smoke it because the bugs will leave it alone at that point... then you just keep it in the sun as much as possible. Also, you could build a chimney of sorts to guide the smoke directly onto the meat... I hope this helps! Kind regards, Paul

You are really skillful for such a young bushcrafter! Bravo! Nothing like teaching the ol dog some new tricks. Your jerky could probably convert some vegans out there!! I'm fond of my jerk jerky that I used to have to hide from my oldest daughter or it would vanish in her high school!! You are a very capable instructor amigo, keep it going!! Regards,Expo

I just got back from a civilian survival course where we did this. We had to painstakingly chip at a piece of hard wood and used the chips to smoke it. If this method works then I think I would prefer it =). Also after eating that jerky I'm putting salt into my survival kit. Great vid thanks for posting.

Thanks! Yes, it only needs to be smoke for a few hours or until the outer part has dried enough that the bugs leave it alone... then it is just a matter of keeping it in the sun. Be sure to check out the full article on our website! Kind regards, Paul

Awsome. You are a survivor. I will try that method with fish when I go camping this summer. Do you have the keep the little fire going for the days the meat is drying? Also what is a safe way to know if it is cooked/dryed enough?

Thanks for commenting! Yes, I definitely take steps to protect it at night... you can hoist the rack so it is hanging high in midair or you can just take the meat off and store it somewhere overnight... then put it back on again in the morning if you need to. Enjoy!

Thanks for the response Remus. As to the smoke, yes, it matters very much. It is the smoke that keeps bugs from landing on the food, it also serves to impart flavor, but the wrong woods will impart the wrong flavor, also green woods and wet woods will smoke more, but that may or may not be necessary, and could even impart a less desirable flavor. As to deducing the wood he used, that wouldn't answer the more important question: why that wood? Again, thank you for the response!

I have never made this in the cold before, but I assume it would work the same if you had a good amount of sun... having said that, if it is too cold the moisture may not be able to even leave the meat... please let me know if you end up attempting this becasue I am very curious to know!

Thank you so much! I am glad that you enjoed the video! In regards to the saltiness: actually the jerky was not salty at all... in fact it was not to tasty either. The smoke only adds smoke flavor... but you can add salt to the meat if you like. I didn't because I wanted to simulate the technique in its most primitive form... and snakes? Well I think they must have been scared off by my t-shirt. Kind regards, Paul
@HedgehogLeatherworks16 жыл бұрын
Hello! Well, this method will NOT kill any bad creepy crawlies that might be in the meat already... ideally you want to use fresh lean cuts of meat. Sometimes you can get away with having parasites and larve in there if you cook it... but in any case, be very careful! Good luck and thanks for commenting! Kind regards, Paul

Nice video thanks for sharing. I too am a fan of beef jerkey and smoked meats. Too much is a bad thing thouhg, as the smoke has carcinogens in it. Some cultures that relied extensively on smoked meats had double the instances of stomach cancer compared to a 'normal' population. Of course all that goes out the window in a survival situation, just a friendly FYI while we're all still practicing our skills and not putting them to the test.
@HedgehogLeatherworks15 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct... you want to smoke the meat until it is dry to touch... the wet meat attracts bugs that lay eggs in it. If you like, you can keep on smoking it as long as you want... this may add some flavor too as the meat alone is pretty bland. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
@HedgehogLeatherworks15 жыл бұрын
Great to hear! Well, you must keep the flies off of it, and the smoke helps at that... then you have to keep it exposed to the sunlight so that it may dry out completely. Once it is dry, there is nothing left to rot... although in time, the fat can go rancid. You'll have to experiement to get a feel for it... good luck!

Hey, glad you like it! In regards to the bowdrill: lots of different types of wood will work but ONLY IF you have the proper technique down. I have not experimented with pine but I think it may be a difficult one given the fact that it contains so much resin. Please be sure to check out our article and video on the bowdrill at the campfire section of our website! Thanks again!
