I got here from painting restoration, and now I am certain that fine art and music instruments go hand in hand with fish bladder, thanks, great video and I like the part about how expensive the raw materials are gee whizzo!

I am really confused since first time I hear that very strong fish glue/isinglas was made by cooking for only one hour. It usually takes minimum 12 hours or even 24h of simmering. Only if it left in water for 24 hours before cooking in order to soften it or make "pasta-like" stuff? I am impressed by this method.

What's amount of the bladder and water . Water temperature to boil or how much time .Can we use only air dried bladder for making glue . Sorry my english is not good
@KrutzStrings5 ай бұрын
The bladder has to be completely dry. Start with two times the water for the amount of bladder. Don't boil the water. Hot water is enough. Keep glue in hot water for one hour. Then it is ready. Hope that helps, thanks for asking!

Can i use bladder from any fish, and if it so, are all bladers the same or there is some stronger than other?
@KrutzStrings5 жыл бұрын
Good question! Yes, you can use bladders from most any fish. Sturgeon happens to produce the best glue though.

Is it OK, or good to put the air bladder in water for 1 day before cooking?
@KrutzStrings6 жыл бұрын
One day is fine. If it is longer than that then mold may start forming. Thanks for the question!

RIDICULOUS .. Hide Glue, Fish Glue, and even PVA (Elmer's Glue) is stronger than the wood when the joint is made and clamped correctly.
@KrutzStrings6 жыл бұрын
PVA glue I don't know about. But a wood joint glued with the highest strength Hide Glue or Sturgeon Fish Glue is stronger than the wood. This is because unlike the PVA glue, which leaves a layer of film between the wood joint, these two natural glues interlock the fibers of the wood. I have personally glued wood joints and then tried to break the joint the next day. The wood around the joint breaks but not the glued joint itself. Yes, weather, age and humidity can weaken the glue over time. But at the time, if the process is done right, the joint is stronger than the wood around it.

Is 2 hours of simmering enough to evaporate enough water? What should be the ratio in terms of dry bladder weight before simmering and the glue received after that? 3rd question - If I take out the glue from refrigerator - do I just heat it alone or I need to add water and heat it?
@KrutzStrings4 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Hope this helps... 1. The simmering time is not about evaporating water but to get the bladder to dissolve within the water to it maximum capacity. 2. We don't measure ratios before or after simmering. The maximum amount of bladder dissolving into the water is the only objective. 3. Heat the glue as is. Once it is liquid then you can judge if you want to give the glue more or less viscosity (thinner or thicker) for what you want to use it for. If you want it thicker then let it stay on the heat to evaporate the water. If you want it thinner then add more water and it is ready.
