Could there be any contaminates in the salt ?

Boiling the water to get salt kills any bacteria, however you wouldn't want to gather salt water in a polluted area as the pollutants may remain. Best is to gather straight from the ocean away form harbors or industry.

Ocean water all around the world has very similar chemical composition. If you don't take water directly next to the pollution source, it is safe.

Could you do this with something other than a metal container? I'm thinking wooden pot/bowl, clay perhaps.
