The problem with Yoga Hosers isn't that Kevin Smith wanted to spite the critics for Tusk... to the contrary, I think he was actually surprised at how WELL Tusk was received, because he had done it on a lark after getting inspired during a podcast, and wasn't expecting much for it. But it became kind of a weird cult success (even Nicholas Cage told Kevin that he loved Tusk), and I think that's what gave Kevin the confidence to make Yoga Hosers, which was another podcast inspired idea. But since Tusk had worked out well for him, he was like, "Shit, let's go for broke! I'm gonna do WHATEVER I WANT with Yoga Hosers!" And what Smith wants is to just have a good time with friends and family, making a fun movie that he doesn't have to care too much about or be too serious with. That's his happy place. He loves playing in his own little world. And the crux of Yoga Hosers' problem is that it's the ultimate Kevin Smith inside joke. You have to have listened to the podcasts with Scott Mosier and Andy McElfresh and Ralph Garmin, to get all the inside jokes they make that reference podcasts they had done. "Yoga Hosers" was a random joke Scott Mosier made during a podcast, and Kevin thought it was hilarious. The Bratzis came straight from a riff that Kevin and Andy did on their Edumacation podcast at some point. If you've ever listen to any of the podcasts, you'll know that Kevin often goes on about how fascinated he is with Canada, because it's the only other country he ever went to as a kid. He cast his kid and Johnny Depp's kid just so that he could spend some time with his kid and help her start her acting career (yep, just pure nepotism through and through, but the thing is that it's such a small, shitty movie anyway, there's really no reason to be mad about it), and she's friends with Lily-Rose Depp, so it all just kinda worked out that way. From there, he just threw all the random, wacky shit he could think of that his podcast audience would get, but not really anyone else. It was always very much meant to be an inside joke for his most devoted fans. I don't think it succeeded on that level either, but it helps to understand the kind of mindset that Kevin was in when making that movie. He really wasn't trying to make a good movie. He was just trying to have a good time and do whatever he wanted. It was an excuse to "play make believe" with his daughter and his friends, and play around with a bunch of ideas about Canada that he had always been fascinated with. He started the Canada thing in Tusk, and he also has another movie in mind that he wants to make called "Moose Jaws", which is... Jaws with a moose. He wants it to be his "Canada trilogy". Part of the idea behind the whole ridiculous attempt at whimsy in these movies is that Kevin sees Canada as being a very "cute" country with a lot of whimsical charm compared to America, and he's trying to capture that feeling of whimsy with his brand of comedy.

I fucking love tusk because it was one of the first movies that truly infuriated me. Justin's performance is incredible. Despite being the biggest asshole, you still feel really bad for him during the diner scene. Watching him cry as he was paralyzed give me chills and remains a scene that I keep going back to. But, as soon as you reach that 40 minute mark Tusk becomes the worst movie I've ever seen. This is why the movie stays with me. Believe me, I've seen more horribly cheesy and shitty horror movies than any sane person ought to so it really wasn't that aspect that made me so intrigued. It's the fact that the shitty movie in the second half was so powerfully juxtaposed by the first half. I'm not saying the first half is an incredible piece of cinema by any means but it is entertaining and contains some great acting from the character of Howard and Wallis. I don't know if I can explain it any better than that but for some reason I truly find tusk an enigma that's enchanted me and now manages to pop up in nearly all my conversations. OK Ryan, I got 4:40 in and your assessment of Red State was so off the mark with "shallow social commentary", but maybe its because you don't live in the US and think you really know our society but not as well as you think at all if that was your take of Red State.
@Aster_Risk4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I was actuall not the biggest fan of Red Sate, but the film was not shallow. It was pretty spot on and horrifying in a real way.

I like his movies because they are fun horror stoner movies that you can watch for what they are, nonsense without limits, and when sober, you can also watch them and think "oh shit, he's serious". His movies made me laugh several times but after the credits roll i always felt kinda sad (especially Tusk and Red State) I personally think he understands horror quite well, horror is a broad genre and you can do whatever you want in it without worrying about it being realistic or even logical, it makes you feel things you wouldn't usually feel

Kevin Smith talked about yoga hosers on the Joe Rogan Experience. Apparently it was just an excuse for Depp and Smith to make a movie with their daughters and he wasn’t actually concerned with how it would be received. Maybe I’m being silly, but I find that endearing. Like a movie they made for themselves, for the fun of it and if we happen to want to watch it we’re more then welcome too. I think that’s charming!

never has a movie ever stuck with me as much as tusk, i have never not been able to sleep because of a movie before but tusk... it was stuck in my thoughts for months. the imagery of the human face on the walrus, the poorly done surgery and blood curdling screams, its the worst, honestly. its on my list of favourite movies JUST because of how it changed me completely. i honestly feel like it has stuck with me, and changed the way i sleep at night. i can't get over it. kevin smith did an amazing job.

I'm not going to lie, Tusk gave be more nightmares than any other horror film has. Mental degradation & being permanently confined in such a hell is worse than any gore, to me, because it just impacts on such a deeper level.

I don’t typically have problems with gore or body horror but the sight of the walrus (no matter how realistic the effect does/doesn’t look) made me feel legitimately ill. I don’t know how you watched the whole film.
@JimmySteller11 ай бұрын
I mean, it was a horror film that was legitimately horrifying. I watched it in the cinema, and frankly, I'd say Johnny Depp's scenes were the parts that brought the movie down somewhat. After the initial burst of laughter realising it's Johnny Depp pretending to be a Quebecker, the joke wears out fast.
@JohnStanworth4 жыл бұрын
Tusk was too unrelentingly bleak for my taste. You're just told he's a cheat and then the rest of the film is him suffering. Maybe it could've used more comedy.
@blahthebiste79244 жыл бұрын
I thought it had a good amount of comedy. At least, if you take the absurdism of the whole thing as comedy
@preciouseggmcmuffin89924 жыл бұрын
it feels more like satire to md, to a degree anyway. in the podcast, smith is joking abt the ending, where he's fed a fish wrapped in newspaper and looks off into the distance as soft, emotional piano music plays. and honestly, after hearing that, it really is hilarious. I imagine that was the thought process for much of the movie, and it makes it funnier to me

I’ve never seen any of these movies but holy hell Tusk sounds horrific. I’m sure it has silly elements but what scares me most in horror is blank desperation with no chance of escape, body horror applies fairly well to this. The idea of being stuck in a body knowing you will never be yourself again and not being able to be “euthanised” (I know that’s dark but why’d you think it scares me so much) honestly scares me more than anything else. Even though it’s absurd, being turned into a walrus, that’s fucking horrifying.
@catnumber69674 жыл бұрын
quiplo Sounds like reading ‘Johnny Got His Gun’ would f*ck you up (which is what it’s meant to do). Easily one of the most haunting novels I’ve ever read for the exact type of horror you describe here. (I watched Tusk alone when I was like 13 and it messed me up for days-I had to imagine the main character gets rescued just to move on lol)
@trevordavis68304 жыл бұрын
I've seen Tusk and man its pretty disturbing. While some of the scenes can get pretty boring or cheesy, anything having to do the main character after he gets drugged is horrifying. For such a ridiculous sounding premise, Kevin Smith did a really good job at making it scary.

Brigette Fitzgerald I remember when I first heard “One” by Metallica and found out what it was based on (Johnny Got His Gun), it messed me up BAD. Just the concept of losing all of your limbs, your eyes, mouth, and ears, and being kept alive through it all with no way to communicate with anyone is deeply disturbing
@catnumber69674 жыл бұрын
SOBEK yeah that book is sad as hell. The author definitely succeeded in getting his anti-war message across. Also it’s almost worse that the narrator DOES figure out how to communicate but no one will listen to him...a deeply moving, albeit disturbing, book for sure
