Making Sound Effects with Hydrophone.
Hydrophone & Contact Microphone
Cjossul is a useful tool for field recording and sound design. Explore and record the vibrations coming from the liquid and solid world around you! It can act as an hydrophone or contact microphone. It uses hi quality components like Murata piezo disc, Sommer flexible shielded cable (3 m) and Amphenol nickel plated jack. You can also add a magnet!
Everything is shielded with copper and all the components are chosen to last and resist your most extreme field recordings!
To have a full frequency response you need to use it with an HI-Z input or even better with an impedance adapter (more bass) like the Hosa MIT-129.

Hi Robert, your video and sounds put an enormous smile on my face. Perhaps you should contact Tom Hanks, who has a wonderful fascination with typewriters and has written a book of short stories with these devices as a theme. I think though he would be displeased with your lack of winding-in double sheets of paper, in order to protect the rubber platen from damage.

It would have been useful to hear the Cjossul on its own, without overhead microphones, to give buyers a better idea of its frequency range. It certainly adds to the recording, mixing in both but for the purpose of viewers could you do another example with the Cjossul on its own?

Yes I always mixing over head mics with pick up, i like my sounds to have life feel.

Curious why this wasn’t stated in the notes or in the video, as this was my initial thought. Unfortunately not an inaccurate representation of the contact mic / hydrophone’s performance and I’m wondering if anyone took delivery and was disappointed with the results. It would have been nice to have seen a with and without the overheads comparison, but TY for making the video.

Amazing as always Robert! I had to get one myself! I quite like the build but I'm finding it hard to get the same input gain as in your video. I've tried using the recommended HOSA MIT-129 impedance adapter to connect to the Zoom F6's XLR input (without +48v phantom power) but still, I have to crank up the gain on the recorder and in post-production to get a good level for anything that's not a direct hit to the piezo. Are you using an active D.I box and/or external preamp to connect to the X8? Any tips and insights from your experience would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Im connecting all direct in to TASCAM Portacapture X8 no any adapters. Tascam sound warm and natural.

Hello Lorenzo, when used with the Hosa is normal to have less gain since it's a passive device. When used without it on an HI-Z or Mic input, the gain should be quite high.

Hi, I am following this. The Zoom F6 does not have a jack input, only XLR (too bad of course, even the H4n pro got mixed XLR/Jack inputs...) So you are stuck with XLR inputs and a simple convertor jack/xlr will not change your problem. Maybe the Tascam has a line/instrument input instead of a mic input, and maybe this is what we hear. The low end from the typing machine is wonderful and it is hard to imagine that it comes from the contact mic (maybe Robert Dudzic mixed in a signal from th Géofon?). I am surprised that even with the Hosa you need to apply a lot of level. It is a passive adapter so it is logic, but using all gain from the recorder could bring in some noise. The preamps from the F6 are very good so you'll be okay. Otherwise you'll need to look for a phantom powered preamp that has a built-in impedance corrector.

The are two different think, I use Geofon for recording low frequencies, the other pickups picking all mid and high frequencies. Two of them together works perfect.

This is not a competition what is best, for me is important if i like the sound i will use. My only advise will be, you heave to learn the mic and and decide if this is the sound what you like.
