When buying the brass brush, you can use a magnet to test if it's brass, or just brass coated steel. With a strong enough magnet, you can easily test through plastic packaging before you buy. Brass is not magnetic, but steel is magnetic (stainless steel can be non-magnetic, but if it has a coating, there's no need for it to be stainless). So if the magnet sticks, it's not full brass, just coated steel.

You're plating the metal. Not transferring the color, but literally melting the brass onto the steel (iron). It won't work on all metals, but iron takes brass well (they are compatible).

Blacksmiths have been brushing hot/warm iron with brass brushes to get this result for decades.

I recommend electroplating. Tons of videos on it. Theirs an art to it, that's for sure. This was faster but electroplating will give you a thicker and more even coat

This blows my mind. Im assuming it holds up over time? Any need to throw a clear coat over it?

It will develop a patina like brass does and the patina will then flake off... in a hundred years or so :) A patina develops slower with brass plating than with copper. A clear coat that prevents air and moisture contact should keep the original look - if it sticks to the brassing.

I'm doing this on 6 galvanized bolts, i removed the galvanization with hydrochloric acid/water-mixture, and stopped the acid with baking soda/water mixture again, after that i heated the bolts using a torch, some of them got a real brass look and others a more dull look, i used the same procedure and brush for all.. any idea what went wrong?

Awesome! Assuming that since it is now a "plating", someone could (Gently) polish it back to a non-brushed, brass finish. Does anyone have experience/knowledge to confirm on shut this down?

Alot of reviews on those brass wheels you linked to, say they received brass coated steel wheels, which will NOT work!!

If you're not buying online, you can use a magnet to check if it's full brass or just brass-coated steel. Brass is non-magnetic, but steel is magnetic. If you dismantle the metal first that could work. Just make sure it is thick enough and there are no plastic parts attached that could melt.

Do you clear coat after? Im doing a project with 22 gage sheet metal and round bar and most of it will be bare metal and I’m clear coating with 2k max . I want to try this on part of it but not sure about long term protection.

I can verify it works. Pre-heating speeds up the process, but is not mandatory. Brassing knurled steel needs a wire brush made out of really thin brass bristles, ~0.2mm.

When you use heat on a penny with zinc it turns golden or brass. So its the same process your using heat and the brass is melting and covering the steel. 😇🙏 loved this video super cool and scientific. 😁👏💪💯
