Using stones as fishing weights has to be the oldest fishing hack there is so I thought I would put my spin on. Does it help you catch more fish? I personal don't care it was just a bit of fun.

I used these with the Team Catfish weight slides to make a kzbin.infoUgkxdmsDj7fQXe77DC0l7P7ua8B3PiESUubM Carolina rig and they were perfect for the ponds I fish. I have also used them to make 3 way rigs and these work perfectly. Haven't had any issues with them snagging in rocks or in weeds yet.

I've been making stone ledgers for years. I use a large swivel and cut one loop off and then gorilla glue the swivel to the top of the stone. holds up really well and the glue is totally waterproof and if I did loose a stone there plenty more around.

this is a good idea, I use concrete blocks for deep fishing 800 feet plus, if I lose the concrete block no problem, it just becomes structure for fish, I carry about 10 for one full day of fishing, I lose about 6 to 8 blocks but I'm only using 20 lb test mono

i wasn't really trying to save the planet I just could not be bothered cleaning out the lead smelter and messing round with that for a few weights so i went to buy some and they cost a small fortune and they put a coating on them to look like pebbles so I thought why not use some pebbles, thanks

The Handmade Fisherman well, i have to say that this is how most good ideas start as... i would love to do this too, but i dont havr the resources for a personal shop yet... but out of curiosity, do you think tgis will work for egg style (center hole slip) weights from the same material? and would this also work with commercial landscaping gravel of the same size?

Very pretty sinkers. For those that don't have all this equipment: I find that it is a heck of a lot faster and easier to just wrap a stone in sewing thread. You can wrap in a metal loop if you want, but I just use a loop in the thread. I fish in an area where everyone loses loads of lead. Stones work great (humans have been using them since time immemorial), and cotton thread is certainly better to be leaving in the river than lead!

and with basic tool and a softer stone you can just make some cut on both side to make it more secure. stone sinker would also (i think) be less prone to get stuck between small cracks and small stones.

As a "thinking angler" I found this very interesting, always looking at ways to fool wary fish and I daresay a tad less expensive than the ones I purchased at a tackle shop. I also purchased some a while back shaped and painted to look like mussels but they are far too nice to risk casting out with the chance of maybe losing one . My grandkids will probably auction them off when I go to that great fishery in the sky and think to themselves how eccentric their granddad was lol.

Your stones look pretty soft and drillable. Any idea what the geology is? Here in Sussex most beach pebbles are flint and are very hard.
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman 7 жыл бұрын
Where I took some of these pebbles from is an odd beach as it is an estuary that is cutting away an alluvial plain which contains pebbles rocks from all over the place, big pieces Scottish granite, schist, red sandstone and grit-stones and everything else left by the last ice age. I think I had a piece of sandstone and some schist and some other pebbles i found in the garden which were sandstone. I think flints would really be a little beyond a masonry drill but it is not something I have experience of. It may be worth a trip to the garden centre to see what they have and generally they sell a bag cheaper than a pack of weights. If your married take the missus and earn some brownie points so you can get out on a fishing trip. This evening while trying to find some pike i clipped a tree with my lure and lead weight dropped out at my feet with a bit of line still attached, I wish I had been that lucky with the pike cheers
