Making Television Picture Tubes at Mullard

From the first commercially made electronic television sets with cathode-ray tubes, manufactured by Telefunken in Germany in 1934, to the last of the TVs made with CRTs around 2015, these ubiquitous vacuum tubes were the primary way that TV was viewed for close to 90 years. Mullard Ltd. made this extraordinary film showing the whole process of how CRTs were made, from design to test.

I still think a well-built, properly adjusted CRT picture tube TV looks better than the picture on modern flat screen sets.

An extraordinary amount of time and money was invested in this production facility. I'm glad it resulted in a long run of decades, ensuring that the investment was well rewarded. No doubt some young apprentice started off sweeping the glass fragments off the floor and then gradually working their way through all departments (whilst diligently studying at Technical College to obtain professional qualifications) to finally retire at the requisite age to obtain their State Pension. Apart from holidays to the Far East (flying in a Lufthansa Super Constellation), their retirement consisted of many mugs of beer, sausages and TV watching on Mullard CRT's. made in their own production facility. What a life 😊.
