Absolute favourite tv show from my Irish childhood! So many good memories. The music alone makes me feel happy (to this day, I’m in my mid 30’s). I used to build my own time capsules in the back garden, (with outdoor tables and chairs 😂), had my own “PJ” device (using some kind of strap), and a transducer of course (courtesy of my sisters hairband 🤣). My fiends and I would have a ball! Lost in the world of “The Girl From Tomorrow” for hours and hours. Ah those innocent days. Thanks for uploading.

Those are lovely memories, thanks for sharing them! :) I didn't try to build any time capsules in my garden when I was a kid, but when I grew up I got a tattoo of one on my inner bicep as a tribute to my favourite childhood show (which I still love to re-watch now, and I'm 40!)

I DMed John H on Instagram to show him some fan art of Silverthorn and that’s how we started talking. When I was a kid watching the show, I never imagined that one day I would be talking to the actor who played Silverthorn via phone and video calls (which I can do for free on Instagram, not like back in the 90s when it would cost a fortune to call someone in Australia!) I feel very privileged to have connected with John. He’s nothing like Silverthorn but sometimes he speaks to me in Silverthorn’s voice for fun and it gives me shivers 😄😄😄

John Howard told me another little gem of information today… he said he was “very lucky” to get the role of Silverthorn, because originally a different actor (he didn’t know who) had been cast to play the role. But then when that actor pulled out (maybe he was unwell, or possibly had been offered a “better opportunity”), the part became available again and John was available at the time to step in. It’s funny to imagine a different actor playing Silverthorn because for me John gave the character everything that made him memorable. I’m sure that even if the original Silverthorn actor had done a brilliant job and had been very good looking too, I wouldn’t have enjoyed his performance as much as I enjoyed John’s! 🙂

@WinterGirl I've seen that and thought it was great. John Howard has played a lot of bad guys over the years but he comes across as a really nice guy in real life (from what I've seen and read in interviews, I haven't met him in person, sadly!) and is passionate about land rights for Aboriginal people and many other good causes. I thought it was cool that he used the unfortunate coincidence of sharing his name with a racist politician as an opportunity to do that great sketch apologising on behalf of all the white Australians who have a conscience!

If I was able to upvote this comment x 1000, I would! :D Glad to see that several others agree that JH was a "looker" as Silverthorn, because when I first saw the show as a kid back in the early 90s, Silverthorn was my first crush! :D And I was teased over that, but I reckon many other girls must have secretly felt the same way about him as I did! I was just the only one who had the ovaries to openly admit it... :D (Edited to add: I'm obviously not condoning the character Silverthorn's violence and sociopathic behaviour though! :) Watching the show as a kid I was on Alana's side, I just happened to also fancy the bad guy :) And as Mark Shirrefs pointed out in the video, Silverthorn was a multi dimensional villain, he wasn't just a generic bad guy, and there were moments when I felt sad for him (like when he was sick with the brain tumour) but I also wanted Alana to win. The writing and acting was of such high quality that I was able to have sympathy for both the heroine and the villain, which I think was unusual for most kids shows at that time.)

@@LaSirenitaRoja 100% agree. That was exactly my experience. Other girls in my school in Slovakia were making fun of me because I had a crush on him! Of course I was rooting for Alana, too. But Silverthorn is why I am re-watching the show. It's like do I like the same guy from when I was like 10, now that I am well into my 30s. And of course I still do LOL! He is so sociopathic, unfortunately... But honestly, he is from such fascist horrible 2500 world that he probably only survived by being as ruthless as he is.

John Howard also told me that the area where the beach scene in Tomorrow’s End (when Silverthorn swam to rescue the boy) was filmed is very dangerous for people to swim so originally they wanted a stunt actor to stand in for John, but John who is a very experienced ocean swimmer insisted on doing his own stunts 🙂 He wasn’t bragging about it though, he is a very modest person. I can't help wondering, what does the achronyme "PJ", the name of her computer companion, stands for? And thanks for a wonderful and lovely tv-show. Interesting ideas for future innovations, the washing machine, the shower, both conserving water! The computer companion, wich I loved most and of course, the transducer, a sort of parapsychic amplifier. Maybe they are becoming real someday? I have one question though: why didn't they let a company manufacture toys designed as the computer companions and the transducers? And means to apply make-up in form of the three dots on the upper left cheek and temple? I'm sure many fans would love that!
@Scripture-Man5 жыл бұрын
Good question, I never thought about what PJ stood for before. The 'P' is likely 'personal' but no idea what the J is! Or perhaps each wristband computer has its own name, and Alana's is called something like Patrick James?

In answer to your question, I guess there wasn't as much merchandise and marketing around kids drama shows in those days as there is for shows made today. It would have been amazing if there had been more TGFT merchandise though! I know LOADS of kids made their own transducers and PJs out of hair bands, toilet rolls etc. The only official merchandise I know of were the books by Mark Shirrefs and John Thomson that were released around the same time as the show, but if anyone reading this knows otherwise, please let us know! :)

I was only 9 when I watched "The girl from Tomorrow" 💖 It was so scary to me, yet also so facinating. I never forgot Alana and the time-traveling. As a child, I based my favourite barbie on her. A 1989 Skipper doll, which had a magical jewel, and could travel between worlds. She was just as pure and innocent as Alana. About Jenny (Melissa Marshall) I have found nothing, nada, zero. In filmography she only has the girl from the future and a role prior to that one, and that is it. I also found 3 people with that name but one was a tedX talker (which isn't her because of accent and eyes), an actress with the same name but is from Canyon Country, CA and a third one is a singer with the same name but doesn't look like her younger self (specially her eyes).

I remember Girl from Tomorrow. I haven't watched it in many years. I remember when it aired on CBBC in the UK in the early 90s. It was a good time travel mini-series. Better than that terrible Australian time travel movie The Time Guardians starring the late Carrie Fisher.

Definately much better than that other Aussie series "Round the Twist" on at the same time. "Did you ever... ever felt like this? When strange things happen...are you going round the twist!?" lol

@@danvenables4935 Round the Twist was good but it's more a quirky weird kids show.

Do they have the behind the scenes documentary of Tomorrow's End?

I've definitely seen a record of this being made but back in the 90s the person I emailed from Film Australia said it didn't exist so I couldn't order it... it's such a magical series and I really wanted to see The Making of Tomorrow's End!

@@littlegreenbag Where did you hear that there was been a record of TE being made? :) I hope it really does exist! :) It would be so amazing to see another cool little doc like this one! Also, I wonder if there are any funny outtakes from the show in existence somewhere!

They might reboot the series in the future

Mark Shirrefs told me that a British company is planning to do a reboot, but that the original writers won’t be involved. I would be interested to see it just to see what it’s like but I know I will always love the original from my childhood best.

I remember this

Wow, what a great series that was... I remember watching it religiously and waiting for each episode with anticipation. It was an inspiration for so much play and dreams and to this day I genuinely think it helped me to survive the horror of everyday life - as the Yugoslav war was raging and the bombs were falling over our heads. Croatia was far from paradise during that dreadful time so I could quite easily bond with the 'Girl from Tomorrow' - I just imagined I was a person from a different time like she was. It was also quite easy to fall in love with her, because I was a boy and she was so pretty, even though I was eight! I've seen it again recently and it really does hold up. In fact, because I was so young when I watched it originally, it's possible I didn't understand it all so it made my recent watching that much more exciting. The cast was chosen brilliantly and the story is precisely what a children's TV series (that can be enjoyed by adults!) should have. Cheers everyone!

I’m so sorry your childhood was impacted by the trauma of the war, but thank you for sharing your beautiful story with us of what the show meant to you! ❤️

@@LaSirenitaRoja Thank you! I didn’t think anyone was reading! IMHO, stories like these are worth telling and sharing because there is always a chance we might learn something about ourselves so that we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past. History is full of repetition. In any case, I’m happy to see that I’ve told my story, which is just a one of many, to the “right” crowd 😉 Best wishes!
