Karl Koenig invented the Gumoil alternative process. He uses an enlarged interpositive to create a photographic image. The interpositive is contact printed onto paper hand-coated with a mixture of liquid gum arabic and potassium bichromate. This is exposed to an ultraviolet light source, then developed in water. The resulting image is then coated with oil paint, allowed to "set"; the excess oil paint is rubbed off with paper toweling, then the image is etched in a dilute mixture of water and household bleach. The result is a true photographic image with atmospherics and painterly qualities. Watch this 28 minute movie to see how it is done.

Thank you for the information. I strongly think you should wear gloves when handling dichromate. And a gas mask when mixing it from powder or at least do it outside. It's very harmful

Thank you for the amazingly clear explanation of this interesting process, a process which was quite opaque to me when I only read about it.

Alan, if you miss the darkroom, consider taking a workshop with the Photographer's Formulary in Condon, Montana. Dan and Jill Burkholder have workshops there the same week this year. Go to workshopsinmt[dot]com/Burkhldr-PT-PD--July.html to see the workshop description. Good luck and welcome back to the darkroom! Anthony Mournian

1:55 I had to laugh because I've never ever heard liquid measured in inches. Also did you meant potassium dichromate instead of potassium bichromate? It sounds like you're saying bichromate which I'm not familiar with. I'm getting back into printing after a very, very long (decades) hiatus from wet work and need a few "refreshers". It's 9 years later but still relevant. Thanks for sharing this.
