Nice work. Minor point for improvement would be when aligning the split faces for surface grinding, after being cut on the bandsaw. You used a digital angle finder, on a sawn face. You could end up with the tapped holes not being perpendicular to the split faces, which in a more critical application would cause undue stress on the bolts. Wind the tap into one of the holes, and using a clock, or your angle finder, adjust until the tap is vertical, use a drill blank to suit the plain/counterbored holes to do the same on the other half.

Not a critical application this this was a more than acceptable way to do it. Unnecessary set up time therefore wasted production time. If I sent a drawing to our machinists with a +/- . 010 and they wasted time trying to get +/- .002 somebody is getting fired.

@@matthewmoilanen787 I’m well aware that it’s not a critical application, but, to do what I’d explained would literally take me 2 minutes. If you would fire someone for that, I don’t think you’d last very long in a position of power.

Unless I missed it, the two halves should have been dowel pinned together since the are roller bearings riding on them. Second, I don’t see the need for a split nut in the first place as the threaded arbor is fed through the trunnions.
@The_Trained_Observer
@The_Trained_Observer 6 ай бұрын
@1bigapple2 I posted a reply to a similar question above. My evaluation of the theory of the split nut is repeated here: I am also unable to find any detailed information regarding the use of a split nut in an English wheel. But a search of the internet describes generally how a split nut provides greater precision of positioning of the screw because the backlash is less than a standard nut when reversing the direction of the screw inside the nut while opening and closing the gap between the two wheels. This opening and closing the gap between wheels is the key to how the wheels perform their magic. (Remember, backlash is inevitable) I can also envision how the precision of the split nut can be adjusted to reduce the slop caused by wear of the threads after the split faces of the nut halves are precision ground with a surface grinder, as it is ground during the original construction shown in this video. Wear on the threads is inevitable over the life of the tool. That grinding will make the screw and nut mesh tighter with less backlash when the split is reground with a surface grinder.

@@illbeyourmonster3591 Then how exactly would you make a nut work with an ID smaller than the OD of the shaft it's on? It's a purpose built part that needs to be made just the way he did as the upper and lower OD are fit to the arm of the English wheel. He's actually simplified the design, look at how the originals were made, extremely labor intensive to replace when needed. And his design takes a lot of the slop out, allowing for more pressure with less deflection on the anvil support arm. He's increased the TPI, so it doesn't become like the acme screw in an old vise after just a few years. It's better engineered, not over engineered.

Janos Nagy J, I was responding to Brad Poirier’s inquiry as to why a split nut rather than a whole nut. It seems to me that in order to fit the two thrust bearings into their respective recessed compartments while maintaining a close fit necessitates the use of a split nut. Otherwise, how could you make the assembly ?
@kmoecub
@kmoecub Жыл бұрын
A split nut makes changing saddles (the part that goes into the hole) much faster. The nut can be unsplit in few seconds, while unthreading the saddle from a common nut would take far longer. It also allows the shaft for the saddle to be supported laterally in the lower half of the clevis. Without that support the roller would tend to wander as the shaft would move under load.
