I have ALWAYS wanted to wear the Red Dress from Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge, so I was completely delighted to make this for myself. In this video, I discuss webpages and information out there about the dress, study the dress in detail, and then draft and sew the bodice. In it, I teach drafting on a dress form techniques, flat-lining, how to use grommets, how to add boning, make and use piping, and the joys of using coutil. By the end of the video, I have a well fitted and finished bodice.

So in regards to the tight-lacing scene - As a burlesque performer, I can tell you from experience that all that jostling around means that you would have a slightly less cinched waist for ease of movement. I would have a fellow performer tight lace me after an act when I went back into the crowd, because I didn't need the mobility anymore.... that being said, I doubt Baz Lhurman had the backstage knowledge to leave that factoid in 😅

Fun fact: The red dress in Pretty Woman was a total trendsetter. Before that, red dresses weren't super common for the female protagonist. In the making of the movie, it was originally planned to be a black dress, but the costume designer changed the dress design to be red based on Julia Roberts taking the role with her rich red-brown locks.

Yaaasss!!!!! You are the lady in red and I live for this Moulin Rouge dress!!! Red is one of my favorite colors especially in costumes. One of my favorite red dresses is the burgundy ball gown worn by Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind with the luxurious red silk velvet, fabulous ostrich plumes and glass montees which is 1870s meets 1930s.

This is one beautiful bodice. I love Moulin Rouge for the costumes especially and Nicole is fabulous in it. Isn't it ironic that Hollywood has updated operas? This is LA Traviatta and Rent was LA Bohême. My favourite red gown is the Met Museum Charles Frederick Worth 1893-1895. And it's obvious that your Birch Mattress has received the Elspeth paw of approval. How is she? And Malcolm and Matthew?

I'd love you to do Marianne's red riding suit from Les Pactes des Loupes, for two reasons, one it's super cute and two the film is love and needs to be shared. Yes Monica Belluci's costumes are mostly more wow, but the red military style is so cute. There's also the military painting scene from the Scandalous Lady W with Natalie Dormer, which is the portrait of Sydney Worsley by Gainsborough. There's the red gown from the party scene in The Honest Courtesan, most of her dresses are silver or peach but for her coming out she wears red. It's another great film for frock p_rn based on a real life icon, the poetess-courtesan Veronica Franco

There's a french movie of Beauty and the Beast (2014 with Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel) with absolutely gorgeous costumes. And of course, Belle's final dress is a red one 😂 Although surprisingly enough did not end up in my top looks for that movie 🤔 Satine's red dress is just so iconic and beautiful. The shape and construction of the bodice of the original red dress is also very similar to an 8 or 12 piece tutu bodice, including the way it tapers and extends down past the natural waist.

Also the boning placement - in case people don't know, most professional tutu bodices are actually boned with steel and are quite close fitting - they feel very similar to a victorian boned bodice or corset
