thank you so much for this. I bought the pattern, watched the video and now I have a great bag for my daughter. I agree that the pattern cutting was a tiny bit confusing for a beginner - but if you just keep thinking you get it and then it is really logical. I'm a beginner, I've ever used fusing material or foam and I have just loved it. It didn't do all the card bits which was quite funny when it came to the final pulling through the zip - I had to undo a seem in the lining which was fine. SOOOO much thought and time has been put into this - again, thank you very very much.

Thanks so much. I definitely have a thing about having my clips the right way up ☺️ otherwise they can mess up your stitching - especially if you’re doing zips, then you can end up with wobbly looking zips 😬

I like your tutorials very much, and learn a lot from you. Just one technical comment: I notice that when threading, you miss the last thread guide, at the top of the needle.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s funny because I got given the machine by my grandmother and taught how to thread it the way I do it, without the top needle guide. I’ve never had any problems what so ever and then realised from the instruction manual that I wasn’t doing it right but have never changed how I do it since it always worked fine for me this way and my grandmother says she never used it either 🤷‍♀️ maybe I should try it just to see what happens but I’m so used to doing it now that I don’t even think about it ☺️
@ednahalamish1649
@ednahalamish1649 4 жыл бұрын
@@CountryCowDesigns I see your point. But the thread guide at the top of the needle is there in every sewing machine, and probably for a good reason. So it is a good habit to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
I used the stabilisers in the pattern requirements - the brand name will depend where you are but it’s medium woven interfacing (Vilene G700/SF101/Wovenfuse) on all the cottons and then foam on the exterior pieces (Style Vil/Bosal/Annie’s Soft & Stable)

Agreed, I'm making one for my daughter, and she doesn't want the zipper pocket or card holders. It would be nice to have an option for interior slip pockets only.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
I did consider adding that option but then some have also requested an option for a zipper panel top and others want an option for box corners and by the time I add all of the options the pattern would be extremely confusing to read and very difficult to cut out because you’d only need to cut out certain pieces depending what you’re doing. I already get a lot of people confused with the tall and small size options so I didn’t want to cause any further confusion. I have other patterns with slip pockets though so you can copy the technique from those if that helps? The Vordenza is one of them and there’s a free video for that one too.

Could you use fusible foam and cut it shorter to decrease the bulk in the seam allowance?
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. I never seem to get on well with fusible foam, it seems to crinkle like crazy and I can’t get the crinkles out but if you’ve got one that works well for you then that would be great! I’d cut it 1” shorter in height and width so then it’s 1/2” in on all sides and doesn’t get caught in the seams 😁

Joe, can I ask about your sewing machine. I have a 40 year old Brother mechanical machine and I'd love to try making a bag on that. Is your machine of a similar vintage? I hope that's not a cheeky question. Thanks, Clare.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Clare, no thats not cheeky at all! Yes mine is a Bernina 930, it’s from the 1960s I think and is designed for quilting but it’s very very heavy and made almost entirely of metal. It works great for me. I have to be conscious of what materials I use and I often need my hump jumper but all in all it’s pretty amazing!

Great video. I am confused about one think which is the rivets on your strap. I understand the rivets being in one end of your strap but if you put them on the other you won’t be able to adjust the strap. Please help.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia, the strap is adjusted using the slider so you need to secure the strap to the slider first and then you have to secure the loose end of the strap at the end. I don’t attach it any differently to if I was sewing the strap, I just add the rivets instead of, or in addition to, the stitching so it’s fitted exactly the same as a standard adjustable strap.

Hi I'm having a senior moment here when it says to join certain pieces together do I cut and tape together as some would be funny shape as they don't match up, watched the tutorial which I think is great just the cutting and joining of pattern pieces if anyone can explain will much apricated
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yep so the pattern pieces need to be taped together where there are arrows and it says “stick to piece...” but you don’t want to overlap them. I show it briefly in the Momexa sewalong part 1 - might be easier to see what I mean as I’m not convinced I’ve explained it well 😆 Here’s the link for it, you’ll want to skip to 00:16:20 in the video and that’s where we’re showing how to match up pattern pieces. Hope that helps but feel free to ask if you need more explanation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqLbiIOKZdh-n9k

Is it possible to put in a top zipper instead of snap?
@CountryCowDesigns

Yes lots of people have done it, but I haven’t done a specific tutorial for it. There’s some KZbin tutorials around though on how to add a recessed zipper to the top of a bag 👍🏻

Do you have a 'hack' to add a zipper to the main compartment? I don't like open-top or snap-only bags. Thanks.
@CountryCowDesigns

I don’t have a hack for this particular bag. I have another pattern, the Vordenza, that has a recessed zipper and I know a few people have copied that method to use on this bag but I haven’t produced an add-on for this one.

@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would just trim it to the length it needs to be. Make sure there’s 1/2” overhang at the bottom. I can’t remember the exact measurement of the completed pocket but you need a bit at the bottom so you can fold it up. Does that help?

Could a recessed zipper be used instead of the magnetic snap?
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you could use a zipper here. You might want to just have a straight pocket without the top curve. If you just added the zip straight to the bag as it is then the zipper tape would be showing on the inside of the pocket. Most people don’t mind that but if you did then you’d need to fit it differently. Also I’d consider using fabric tabs on the end so the zipper doesn’t go into the seams as it could get bulky

Yes it does. There’s not a huge amount of variety but cheap cork tends to be thinner. The stuff I use is always about 1mm thick (or just under) and that seems to work great for bags.

I am attempting this bag today!! I have printed out the pattern pieces but am unsure (teaching myself to sew!) as to whether I need to cut an additional seam excess around the edge of each pattern piece or is that taken into account within each pattern piece? Sorry if this is a basic question but I am a beginner and have never done anything as technical as this before!! Many thanks!
@CountryCowDesigns

Hi Emma, the seam allowances are already included so you just cut the fabric at the size of the pattern piece and you’re good to go 😁 not a basic question. I wondered the same thing when I first started sewing!

I feel really stupid having to ask you these questions!!

My sides are not laying right (curving in) any tips?
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean that it’s curving in on the side seams? I tend to press my seams open with the iron if I’m using cotton or canvas, or I press them open with my fingers if I’m using cork, leather on vinyl. Pressing the seams helps them lay flat so it holds its shake better. Hopefully that makes sense?
